I have been following instructions from the Avast! forum to rid my PC of malware acquired when opening an attachment masquerading as a UPS announcement: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=37421.45.

They suggested I post my HJT scan to this forum for analysis, given that Spybot S&D was the most effective tool in cleaning my PC. The question, of course, is how clean is my WXP PC (Pentium 4, 2GHz). I should mention that I am a naive user, as you would have gathered already, having succumbed to such an avoidable infection.

I would be VERY grateful if an expert on this forum could check over my HJT log for lingering infections:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I see only two minor issues in this HJT log and a little trash.

1) D:\HiJackThis.exe <<< this is unsafe, follow these directions to post the next HJT log.
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

2) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06\ <<< I believe an update is available, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

and while I have you in the chair...:)

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

(next two are optional but suggested, see this: http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/ask-toolbars/ )
O2 - BHO: Ask Toolbar BHO - {F0D4B231-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\bar\1.bin\ASKSBAR.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {F0D4B239-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\bar\1.bin\ASKSBAR.DLL

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Please add any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

Thanks for your detailed instructions.

Everything looked reasonable to my inexperienced eye ..until I scanned with MBAM ..again. It discovered some ***13** files which haunted me from the start of the UPS bundle of infections. I shall post the MBAM log next.

Here is the HJT scan from C:\Program Files\.. instead of my thumb drive (D:):

Just a bit concerned about the information you are posting for me.

MBAM Log: 5:07:49 PM 29/07/2008 <<< that is 7/29/2008
mbam-log-7-29-2008 (17-07-49).txt

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 2:09:16 PM, on 19/08/2008 << 8/19/2008
the HJT log was posted over three weeks after the MBAM log?

How about running a new MBAM log and post the scan results. Make sure you do not cut the log off like it appears was done on this one.

Notepad > Edit > Select All > Copy/Paste the highlited information.

Post a new HJT log that is created AFTER the new MBAM log.

Thanks

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Everything else looks good, how is the computer running? Any malware issues?

You mentioned the Avast forum, what exactly are you running for your antivirus program? If you need a free one, here are three to choose from, do not install more than one.

To pskelley:

Thank you very much for all your good advice. My PC seems to be running fine, but I have been nervous about connecting it to the network for fear of contaminating my wife's PC.

I added AvastHE to my wife's PC and find that is slows it down tremendously. Switching from one user to another (her account to mine) takes forever.

Thanks again,

Bob Furber
