View Full Version : Yet more Virtumonde

Dr_Horse
2008-08-15, 11:26
Wow, really seems to be the flavour of the month.

Yesterday afternoon my Eset nod32 smart security suite noticed something altering files and sure enough I have virtumonde.

I've run Spybot S&D in safe mode several times. Each time it gets half way through a scan and suggests I reboot and rescan. Each time I click yes and reboot at the end of the scan. Each time it reboots and relaunches in to Spybot there is an infection remaining (seems to alternate between 2, 5 and 7 files).

I've also run VundoFix to no avail and Virtumundo Be Gone, which doesn't recognise that I even have the infection.

I can't tell from other posts whether you want just a normal mode HJT log or both normal and safe, so I've done both. Safe is first.

MASSIVE MASSIVE THANKS to the scene of security gurus who keep the internet ticking over for morons like us. I've used forums like this several times in the past on behalf of friends and the level of support and patience I've been shown never ceases to impress me. Thanks again.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Thanks for the feedback, this adware is tough to remove, (the criminals need a firing squad) they care not for you and yours, only $$$ and would kick down your front door just as quickly to get at it.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Hi pskelly,

I have viewed and understand the posting guide.

It probably doesn't matter but FYI - When combifix rebooted the system I was afk and so it booted automatically in to ubuntu on a different drive. When I rebooted from there and back in to XP combifix carried on, seemingly unaffected.

I haven't run IE yet but the computer is running a lot better now (it was barely functioning before) and I have access to Google and Facebook, which haven't worked since infection.

Anyway, here are the logs:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I have no idea how combofix responds to the open source OS but it appears to have worked as it should.

For your infomation:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7344

Let's proceed like this:

1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

2) C:\VundoFix Backups <<< delete that folder and contents

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Tell me how the computer runs, about any malware issues.

Thanks

Yo, I've done all that and the computer is running fine now as far as I can tell. I can now use IE without any pop-ups or redirects. All websites load fine. No problems with auto update or connecting to the internet. Obviously it's a little slow loading cause of the prefetch data being cleared but nothing major. Spybot gave me a clean bill of health too.

This is the log you asked for:

What's next?

I have a couple of questions about peer 2 peer networking, I don't know if you could answer it for me. If not I will ask elsewhere...
Hypothetically, if I were to connect to a peer 2 peer network through an OS running in a virtual machine and download a virus/trojan, would that put my whole system at risk or just the virtual machine? Also, if I forwarded ports on my wireless router to facilitate such a connection, would these open ports pose a danger to anyone else connecting to the router, or just my system, or just the VM?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. What MBAM found is either in combofix quarantine or infected system restore files and we will address that soon.

To try to answer your questions, here is some information, but first I must say I have no virtual machine so my knowledge is limited. Many experts (who have forgotten more than I know) have machines like that to tear the malware apart as they write software to remove the junk.
I am sure the information you seek in available, try using Google to search for answers.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080316-kazaa-downloads-cost-one-man-750-per-song-in-riaa-suit.html

While p2p programs may be legal, many if not most of the files being shared are not, I am hearing more and more about the results of court cases when folks are paying dearly for downloading stuff they could have simply purchased for pennies. Having said that, our policy here at Safer Networking has changed, this is the new policy:

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programs, volunteer analysts will refuse their help.

Moving on, this is the next bridge we need to cross:

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Thanks Phil. I have my windows cd but I've installed RC anyway, here is the CF-RC log.

Looks good:bigthumb: here is some information from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Remove combofix from your computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run a new MBAM scan to be sure we got it all, no need to post a clean scan results.

I suggest you update ESET Smart Security and run a system scan (malware often messes up security programs) to make sure it is working correctly and scans clean. If you have issues, contact ESET tech support for instructions.

I will post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.

Eset, MBAM and Spybot all report a clean bill of health. Everything appears to be tickity-boo.

Thank you very much for your time and help Phil, and thanks for the additional reading.
