Sorry for such a simple question, but can find no setting in the "settings" tab. Also, the search feature here is terrible. So how can I keep it from starting, it's very irritating.

Spybot-Search&Destroy does not "startup" by itself. It only runs when you execute it.
Unless you meant Spybot-SD's Resident Shield (TeaTimer). You can disable it via the Startup Manager (msconfig) or another workaround would be disabling it. Whatever it is to your liking.

You post does not describe your problem clearly, so to cover a few possibilities:-
If you are talking about Spybot's main program starting each time you start your computer, then start SpybotSD, click on mode, click on Advanced, click on Yes, click on settings then settings again to bring up the settings screen. Go down until you find the System Start group and make sure there are no ticks in this group, and whilst you are in this area, also check the Program start group and remove any ticks from that area as well, then exit Spybot.
If you are talking about it starting at some other time:-
Start Spybot, put it into Advanced mode (see above) if it is not already in that mode. Click on settings. Now in the left hand column you will see an item called Scheduler. Click on this and remove any scheduled runs, then exit Spybot.
If you are talking about Teatimer being active all the time (there will be a small Spybot icon in the task bar with a padlock on it), Start Spybot, put it into Advance mode (see above) if it is not already in that mode, click on Tools, click on Resident. Remove the tick for Resident Teatimer, then exit Spybot.
If you are talking about the information balloons, right click on the Teatimer icon in the task bar and remove the tick from Show Info Balloons
Reboot to ensure your change has taken effect.
Please post back and advise whether you still have the problem, and if so please indicate what operating system you have, the version number of Spybot and if you are using Teatimer, what version is that.
