View Full Version : Root of Backdoor.Win32.SDBot...with HJT log
Jack&Jill
2008-08-18, 12:57
Basically I need help for permanent removal of winzip quick pick.exe which always appear on my startup and winzip_tmp.exe on my C drive and windows folder, and prevention. SS&D could not detect them, but they appear to be the root of rundll16.exe and scanregw.exe which SS&D classified as Backdoor.Win32.SDBot.
The first two files keep reappearing...
How do they spread and what are the consequences of not removing them?
HJT log as follows:

Hi pskelley. Thanks for the direction, already remove the files. Usually after I make the removal, the files will reappear within 2 days. So far so good after 3 days.
Checked using KOS too, result is good.
However I noticed that my Windows log on slow down considerably and when I shut down, I need to manually end Tea Timer. The tray icon for Tea Timer is no longer around. Anything wrong? Would appreciate if we can go through all the necessary actions to get an ALL CLEAN. Thanks.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. My suggestion for the TeaTimer issues is to make sure you are running the newest Version of Spybot S&D:
Spybot-S&D 1.6 has arrived! 8. July 2008
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2008-07-08.html
If that does not fix the issues, then try uninstalling the program and reinstall it. If you still have issues with TT at that point, direct your questions to the Spybot S&D forum:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
Domain = precico.com <<< is this a company computer?
http://www.precico.com/ Please see the instructions, post #5 if that is the case.
Norman Virus Control <<< this seems to be your antivirus program but I do not see it in Running Processes? You should check that, unless the program is up to date and running you have no realtime protection.
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_ <<< Java is out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ <<< Adobe is out of date:
Adobe Reader 9.0
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).
3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(leave the first if you set it that way)
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Thanks
Jack&Jill

TT issues solved after installing SS&D 1.6, but log on still very slow.

Yes, but not the company shown at the website. The PC is mine exclusively.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, you said:
but log on still very slow
Are you talking about "Start up" of the computer?
If so keep this in mind:
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:

Hi pskelley.
Are you talking about "Start up" of the computer?
It is actually the loading of windows after I log into my account. The desktop items and the taskbar only appears after a minute or two. I'll see what I can do after going through the links you provided.
So, I guess it's ALL CLEAN at this stage, right? Thank you very much pskelley for your time and effort. Great knowing you :)

Hi pskelley.
Sorry to trouble you again, but the nasty files are back. But this time, all are blocked as soon as they appear by Avira AntiVir and Online Armour.
I went through my latest HJT log and found one entry listed bad by Castlecops:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet
Do I fix it with HJT? Registry search yield entries with suspicious extensions related to the Backdoor.Win32.SDBot. Kindly advise. Thanks.
pskelley
2008-08-29, 13:35
You need to show me the names and pathways of exactly what Avira is showing you, "nasty files are back" means nothing to me.
This item deals with your sound card, mess with it you may not have sound?
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/nwiz.exe-3838.html
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet
Associated with the newer versions of nVidia graphics cards drivers. Allows you to immensely improve desktop layouts by setting preferences and optimizations. However, this isn't necessary for the operation of your system
I have not seen that file being used by malware in my recent memory.
Do I fix it with HJT? Registry search yield entries with suspicious extensions related to the Backdoor.Win32.SDBot. Kindly advise. Thanks. You need to show me what you are talking about, include a new HJT log with that.
Thanks

Hi pskelley.
Thank you for the attention.
Please refer to http://www.castlecops.com/s11951-nwiz_exe_installquiet.html and http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/viruses-and-spyware/w32chodej.html for some information.
Many new host entries were detected by Online Armor having same IP as shown in the second link above, but I do not know how to extract any log to show you. I have blocked nwiz.exe /installquiet with Online Armor, and made some manual removal through the registry related to it over the weekend. I am not sure if the detections by Avira has any relation to it. Please advise if there is any other steps I should do or take. Appreciate the help. Below are the Avira and HJT logs before end of last week. You will find today's HJT log at the end.

1) I am not familiar with the Avira log which is why I did not ask for it.
2) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet
I do not believe that item is malware but I have been wrong before. If you are unsure you can always locate the file and use a free online scanner to find out what it is. Here are three you may keep:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/
3) If you want to know what the files in the Avira log are, use Google or the scaners I posted.
EXP: AVSCAN.EXE
http://www.file.net/process/avscan.exe.html
Time contraints do not allow me to manually scan all of those files, most of my scanners are automated and yes, they occaisional make an error. That is why I rely on the online scanners to be sure before I remove a unknown file. It is easier to make sure than it is to have to hunt for a file deleted in error so it can be replaced.

I see no malware in this HJT log.
If you need help with Avira, have a look here for free online forums:

Hope this helps...Thanks
