View Full Version : Losing the will to live - Virtumonde infection

Hi,

Apologies in advance for the lack of a HijackThis log - I am unable to download it to my infected PC as Firefox is not connecting to the web anymore. I will get a copy on this laptop and transfer it when I am able to get to the PC again.

I am running Spybot and am totally confused by the teatimer messages about registry changes. They all look dodgy, so I am denying them, maybe wrongly.

I also have WinPatrol - it is plaguing me with start up program messages. Again, I am denying them, but they pop up again. WinPatrol wants me to get more software, but I can't connect to the net....

Norton tells me that I need to fix my IP address, but I am in such confusion that I wonder if this is the 'real" Norton or something phishing.

Basically, I want to hand over my computer to an expert and have them fix it before I do something irreparable.

How do I do this? Via Microsoft (I have XP) or can one of you experts do it?

All advice appreciated. And yes, the infection is my own stupid fault, it came with a Pokemon DS game from a torrent site. I thought scanning it with Norton and Spybot would pick up anything bad. How wrong I was.

I live in the Middle East, so am on GMT +4.

TIA,
Sally

Hello Sally

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before YouPost (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Please read this and understand it, if the torrent program is still installed you need to uninstall it please or I won't be able to help you.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/...D-theft_1.html

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programs, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

Do a few things on this infected computer.

1.

Disable the TeaTimer, you can re enable it when were done if you wish

Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.

2.
Right click on the WinPatrol Icon in your system tray by the clock and disable or shut it down.

3.
You can download this program on a known good computer and transfer it to a CD or Thumb drive and then install it on the infected computer. If you can't connect to the internet than bypass the check for updates

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget to do this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

4.
You can transfer this program also

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Post the Malwarebytes log and a Hijackthis log

Sally,

You were infected with the Vundo Trojan, there still may be more hiding so lets do this. Make sure you disable WinPatrol before you proceed.

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

This is crazy - I can't seem to disable my Norton and Winpatrol - I have no tray icons so I can't follow the instructions from bleepingcomputer. The only icons I have are ATI, Webshots, Google Desktop and Safely remove hardware.

Norton Protection Centre doesn't seem to have any obvious way to disable it.

I "thought" I had disabled Win PAtrol as the Scotty icon had gone, but then an alert popped up saying Scotty is on Patrol. This was after I had run the ATF.

Any suggestions?

I also have adaware on my system, but only the free version so it doesn't run unless I open it. I assume that it OK to leave alone?

I have the latest combofix ready to go, but can't disable this stuff.

Sorry...
Sally

PS Spybot always tells me Windows Security Centre_disabled. IS that normal - I always click to fix it.

Morning Sally,

http://www.winpatrol.com/options.html

Read this section and you can take winpatrol out of you start up programs but winpatrol will still be there to run manually when you need it

"Automatically run WinPatrol when computer starts"
Recommended for regular monitoring without losing any system performance. The WinPatrol system monitor will be included as one of your Startup Programs, allowing Scotty to keep an eye out for changes that may occur. If you feel safe and don't need regularly monitoring just remove the check. If you disable WinPatrol from your Startup Programs, you can still run WinPatrol Explorer as part of your regular computer maintenance schedule.

PS Spybot always tells me Windows Security Centre_disabled. IS that normal - I always click to fix it. <--- You may have Symantec configured to take care of the security and it by default may have turned off the Windows Security center. What version of Symantec to you have?

So go ahead and run Combofix

Sally,

Your doing so well :bigthumb::bigthumb: Let me ask you a few things.

Do you want this as a search page, if not fix it with HJT.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://search.conduit.com/?SearchSou...OOGLE_COM&gil=

C:\Program Files\BitComet :red:<--- You need to uninstall this program via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel

Please download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe) by OldTimer.

Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\Program Files\bcd_installed.exe

Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Post the OTMoveIt log and a new HJT log. Everything else looks fine. How is your system running now???

Hi Ken,

I promise you - I did remove Bitcomet, but now I see some files are still present on C:\. It doesn't show under Add / Remove programs. Is it OK if I just delete the folder on C:\ ?

I will proceed with OTMoveIt in the meantime.

Cheers,
Sally

Looks good Sally, I was reading your post earlier but I was at work and was called away, some nerve wasn't it :red:

I hope you read what I posted about P2P programs, more and more computers are being infected by downloading from these programs. I would never allow any programs like that on any of my own systems.

How are things running now??

Hi Ken,

My computer seems to be fine although I haven't done much with it. I wanted the "all OK" first!

I will take on board your advice about P2P - this was a very painful lesson. I don't know how I will cope without Grey's Anatomy though... ;-)

I have a few last questions:

Can I assume my machine is clean now? Is it safe for all normal uses including email?

Should I re enable teatimer? WinPatrol? I had Win Patrol before Spybot started realtime protection. Is there any conflict with the two?

Should I download fresh copies and start from scratch or are these ones now fully functional again?

Last but not least, I liked ATF Cleaner. Is it something that can be run now and again to clean up cookies etc?

Ken, you have been a brilliant help. I can't thank you enough. :bigthumb:

Cheers,
Sally

Good Morning Sally,

Let me tell you, you have done real well and its been a pleasure helping you.

Looks like your good to go, you can get back to normal now. I am going to list some programs for you that are free and recommended by the very nice people in the malware removal community, some have even been written by our own people. Two of the programs are Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster that just run in the background blocking a lot of this garbage from installing, they will conflict with the TeaTimer, so I would keep Spybot Search and Destroy but I would keep the TeaTimer disabled. WinPatrol is an excellent product but it seems to get in your face to often and with SG and SB you most likely won't need it.

Malwarebytes<-- This is yours to keep, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

ATF Cleaner <-- This is also yours to keep, run it a few times a month to keep your system nice and clean

Combofix <-- This is not a general all purpose cleaning tool, do not download and run it without supervision

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present

Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

Malware Complaints (http://malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
Tutorial for System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

GeeksTo Go (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=How_did_I)
Dslreports (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10002)

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
