Help with Virtumonde, FakeAlert, Zlob.downloader, Smitfruad
and others...

I ran fully updated Spybot and Malewarebytes in safe mode
and no addition viruses were captured. (Althought the system
detected their presence.)

Please advise on next steps...Thanks!

G'day and Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Hi Craig, I know the hackers hide the junk, but I am seeing nothing in this HJT log? What does this mean?

(Althought the system detected their presence.)
Exactly what program is find this stuff and what is it finding? You said you ran MBAM and it found nothing yet it is one of the best tools available for exactly what you describe. Please provide more information and for starters the log from MBAM run like this.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

If it is there, we will find it.

Thanks...Phil

Greetings to you!

First of all, your comments about seeing nothing in my HJT Report is good news. I also need to give you some more info to help you...See below:

System - Windows XP Home
Scenario - 1 - On 8-16-08, I was infected with Antivirus XP 2008.
2 - I searched the internet for info about this virus.
3 - I ran a few spyware programs that did nothing and then ran Spybot and it found the virus and fixed my problem.
4 - I ran Spybot again and actually watched the file scanner and noticed all the other rouge names (viruses) on my computer that Spybot could not remove including many auto dialers, FakeAlerts zlob.downloader and Virtumonde.dll and sci.
5 - I found the Spybot forum and signed up and found the wealth of info on the site.
6 - Downloaded Malewarebytes and ran it...It picked up another 6 or so trojans...**First Report is attached.
7 - Ran Spybot and MWB from safe mode. No more viruses captured.
8- Ran ATF Cleaner and HJT.
9 - Submitted thread to forum.

Here are my reports:

BC has no doubt the best tutorials online.

The reason why we rarely ask for reports from Spybot is because experts with that tool reside here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
Please be sure you are running the newest version and that you fully immunized when you update:

MBAM has located infected System Restore files. Windows protects those, this is how you clean those:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.

"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."

Symantec AntiVirus
AVG8
Uninstall one of those.

This looks like a leftover from SAS, if you removed the program, use HJT to remove that item.
O20 - Winlogon Notify: !SASWinLogon - C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SASWINLO.dll

When you are running one antivirus program, post a new log and tell me about any malware issues.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1A1DAC8C-074D-440F-8707-7009A672D7D1} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RunClean Manager

How is this computer running? Any malware problems at all?

Thanks

Thanks!

I completed your instructions, removing the files you suggested.
I then ran cleanmgr. The system is running well.

I have a big question...When I run Spybot, the realtime "bot" scanning
file reader at the bottom of the page shows a long and scary listing of all kinds of viruses, such as auto-dialers, several keyloggers, worms, Smitfraud, Cyboor, backdoor trojans, Virtumonde.dll and .sci and many others... Spybot and MalewareBytes say I'm clean but the realtime scanning reader shows mega viruses...? My system seems to be running faster and better but the viruses still seem to be there...That's a bit confusing... Can you shed some light on that?

Should I run any other reports for you? Thank you soo much for your focus and attention.

(I don't look forward to this, but I would reinstall my OS if neccessary to make sure my system is clean. I use this computer for personal finance/online banking, etc.)

Craig

That list you see scrolling by is just a list of the items in the data base. Notice they are in alphabetical order.

Reformat is one way to be 100% positive, but I really don't think it is needed. Update your resident antivirus program and give it a run and see what it says.

I also use my computer for online banking, etc. I keep a close eye on all accounts.

Great news!!! (That it's just reading from a database and not from my hard drive...)

Thank you soo much for all your help. I read several of your previous posts to other needy people and was impressed with your knowledge and e-mail etiquette and I was hoping that I would get you as my PM/project manager - resident malware soldier/techie.

I think that I'm good for now...I may boot up in Safe Mode tomorrow and run Spybot again just to be sure...

I'll let you know if I should need your expertise tomorrow...

:) Thanks and cheers!
