View Full Version : Virtumonde.dll won't go away
I ran SpyBot and got 2 of 3 to go away. The third one went away on a subsequent try. I ran HiJackThis and and have inserted the contents below.
Thanks for taking a look at this and from what I see in the forums, you all are very thorough and get results.

G'day and Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
This is a tough one to remove, few tools remove it completely allowing the junk to morph and return. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks
Here are the two logs. Appreciate your assistance.

Thanks for returning your information, whatever you are trying to shread with McAfee, please wait until we finish so you don't have that runonce junk in the HJT log.
C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe <<< this is an unsafe location, follow my directions to locate HJT safely.
1)m Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\urqQHyAp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pAyHQqru.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pAyHQqru.ini2
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{6F294B8D-A5D3-4CB6-B532-448284195E09}]
Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [DelayShred] "c:\program files\mcafee\mshr\ShrCL.EXE" /P4 /q C:\DOCUME~1\Johnny\LOCALS~1\TEMPOR~1\Content.IE5\PFJJD1GE\RESULT~1.SH! O9 - Extra button: (no name) - SolidConverterPDF - (no file) (HKCU)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the combofix log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log. Please tell me how the computer is running now.
Use these instruction to safely locate and post your HJT log.
6) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
Thanks
At end of Step#2 you say "post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)". But you also state at end of Step #5 "Please post the combofix log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log. Please tell me how the computer is running now." And then make that reference again at the end of Step #6 ("This will start the scan and open a log. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.")
Not sure you want me to run a different HJT log after all 3 of those steps. I read it to mean do not run the new HJT log until the end of Step 6. Is that correct? That is the way I am rolling unless I hear differently.
Thanks.

Read through the instructions a few times, I would not have had to ask for a the HJT log to be downloaded again if the directions had been read and follow.
1) Down ATF-Cleaner as described.
2) Run CFScript as described.
3) Complete the HJT instruction.
4) Run ATF-Cleaner as described.
5) Run MBAM as described.
6) Download HJT log to the safe location as described.
7) Post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and the HJT log run from the new safe location.
I need the tools all run, but the logs posted only once.
Thank
I am working from my PC now -- I was using my laptop to read the posts and ferry programs over via flash drive to isolate the PC from the internet. So, I was not downloading anything from this PC until Step 6. BTW, the flash drive was scanned during the MBAM process, which found 42 infections.
First thing I notice is that the prompts are present for downloading updates from McAfee and MS (couldn't do it before or wouldn't allow it before). PC runs better. The desktop background options have been returned.
Here are the logs. What's next? I'll check back late tonight.

the flash drive was scanned during the MBAM process, which found 42 infections.
I would say you need to stop using infected flash drives. I believe we should do this:
Download and Run Flash_Disinfector
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe
Download Flash_Disinfector from here and save it to your Desktop.
Doubleclick on Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. This may include your mobile phone.
Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
The HJT log looks clean and most of what MBAM found are in combofix quarantine and infected system restore files, we will clean those soon. This is the next bridge we must cross.
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif
Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC_whatnext.gif
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC_AllDone.gif
Thanks
I couldn't edit my post. The flash drive had zero infections. The PC had 42.

Good job installing RC:bigthumb: here is some information for you:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.
Remove combofix from your computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
Clean infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Run MBAM again to make sure we missed nothing. No need to post a clean scan result.
Update McAfee and run a system scan to make sure the program is running right and scanning clean, if you have any problems contact tech support for instructions.

Thanks for all of your help. MBAM log came back clean. McAfee scan came back clean, too. Sure seems to be a lot more files (61509) and registry keys than before (241121).
Appreciate the additional articles and tips. Should I create and name a System Restore Point for backup purposes? Based on what you saw in my logs, is there any other software that you would recommend be removed?
BTW, the next Microsoft update on my PC is Service Pack 3. Can you expound on the pros and cons of SP3 or is that in another section? After going through all of this to stabilize my PC, I am not sure i want to introduce SP3 to it in case it messes up what you helped me to build.
Again, much thanks for your assistance and patience.

Morning John, don't remember my registry file number, but I have 20,000 more files than you do:)
Should I create and name a System Restore Point for backup purposes?
Should have happened when you just cleaned System Restore but you can check that.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+set+a+restore+point&btnG=Search
Read the links from the experts I posted, those folks have forgotten more than I know. Once you have done that, if you still have questions, post them.
Service Pack #3: I will post this information.
1) I personally had an issue (my computer is clean) so I sent for the CD and am about ready to try again. CD is about $10.00 with S&H and is available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389
2) Microsoft has made free help available if you have any SP #3 installation issues:
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131
Hope that helps...Phil
