hi,

my machine is infected with vista antvirus 2008. i have limited technical knowledge and can really use some help. i have read the instructions and cannot download spybot or get to the HJTinstall website on my infected machine. the machine behaves very poorly and often freezes. also, i am not sure what you mean by uploading HJT from a clean machine to the infected machine (download the intaller to a file and then email it to myself?). and more importantly, i am not sure how to post the log produced by the infected machine using the clean machine without possibly infecting the clean machine. thank you.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

This one can be hard to remove, use this tutorial. I have personally removed this for neighbors and once you get MBAM onboard you can defeat the junk.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-vista-antivirus-2008

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

You can download HJT here:
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, MBAM removed a lot of junk from your computer, let's do a little cleaning.

1) C:\Documents and Settings\david\Desktop\HJTInstall.exe <<< delete the installer, HJT is installed correctly.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall VAV if there.
(uninstall anything else you know does not belong there, if you are unsure let me know and I will look)

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Antivirus] C:\Program Files\VAV\vav.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Antivirus] C:\Program Files\VAV\vav.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com (HKLM)
(you can leave the 015's if you wish, but I don't even trust MM to be on my computers)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Program Files\VAV\ <<< delete that folder and contents

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

Restart, post a new HJT log and tell me about any malware issues.

Thanks..Phil

hi phil,

thanks again for your help. just as a point of info, before i contacted you i deleted the vav folder (vav program, vav1, vav0, and vav.exe-1F5F91BJ.PF), along with a vav control panel extension which was outside the folder. this eliminated the popups and somewhat improved performance which was still very poor. at that time i could not elimate these objects from the recycle bin. after running mbam, i was able to remove them from the recycle bin.

returning to your recent post, i followed your instructions and everything seemed to go fine. looked at my list of programs in add or remove programs, it seemed fine. i do not know how to share the list with you. i ran everything using the file viewing options that you suggested, and then restored the defaults. pasting the htj log.

finally, i have a memory stick with some stuff that i would like to keep that had been used when the machine was infected. is there a safe, easy way to clean it up? thanks again. david

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I don't see any problems in the HJT log, but the MBAM log shows this was a serious rootkit infection.
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=Rootkit.Win32.Clbd.hf&threatid=382906 and we may want to run combofix though it appears MBAM did remove it.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/tdssserv.sys-23624.html
You want to keep a close eye for any signs of infection for a few days. I see from the BleepingComputer information that SDFix can also be used.

Plug your flash drive in and run this tool:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/Flash_Disinfector.exe

Run MBAM again and post the results unless it is clean.

Let me take a look at your uninstall list:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Update Sysmantec and run a system scan, let me know the results.

Thanks...Phil

hi,

i have followed your instructions running flash-disinfector, mbam, and symantec. everything seems fine. thank you for offering to look at my uninstall list, but i think that it is ok.

i have a second computer that i used the memory stick with after having used it with the infected computer (and before cleaning the memory stick). when i rebooted the second computer a message came up saying that the file directory was dirty and the computer was repairing it. after that, i ran spybot, symatec, and microsoft live onecare. this combination seemed to fix it. i was wondering if i should run mbam and atf cleaner as well. i have just run spybot on the second computer and am pasting in the HJT log for the second computer. thanks again for all your help. david

I apologize, but you will need to start a New Tread for the second computer. I will edit out that HJT log so other users do not get confused by it. Once you post your New Thread, the next available helper will assist as soon as possible.
