View Full Version : Downloader.gen.a found repetedly by McAfee but SpyBot finds nothing
I have Scanned the computer with both SpyBot S&D and AdAware and all thigs have been cleade that they found with repeat scanns finding nothing. But McAfee keeps popping up with Downloader.gen.a found and deleted every couple of hours.

Also when I looking in the system32 dirrectory there was that file:

Thanks for the new log and the information about that file. That may be the one McAfee is reporting, I see McAfee is not part of the jotti scan but Avast Found Win32:Trojan-gen.
Let's run combofix to see what it finds, it looks for multiple malware.
1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\ <<< check Java for an update, see this:

Just so you know this file that you had me look at was not the one mcafee was detecting it was the files it kept trying to download and istall it would detect with McAfee's on access scan.
I removed all old versions of Java and installed the updated version you linked.
I ran combofix but there was a problem getting it to run at first. McAfee sees the program as a virus itself. When I tried to first download it is detected it as:
RemAdm - ProcLaunch!171
So I had to disable the on access scan to get it to download and run but I didnt know it needed to reboot to finish to run so on the reboot on access scan was enabled and it detected combofix again and deleted it. But it did generate a log file. But it didnt fix the clock settings back like it said it would.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

I did read the tutorial you posted after I ran combofix because I figured you gave explicite enough instructions and the tutorial does not mention anything about it may need to reboot and the tutorial you linked is for an older version of combofix because the instruction in it do not follow with the program.
You asked how the computer was running well before I just did your last instructions McAfee on access scan was still catching the occasional trojan downlader file that was trying to be downloaded and installed and I was still getting the occasional web page pop up out of the blue even with no browser opened.

Also just letting you know that McAfee on access scanner will delete the combofix cuz it thinks it is a virus so you can tell people in the future that are running mcafee.
and thanks for the info on changing the clock back I found similar info lastnight on searching the web about it. I have not had a chance to use the computer much today but will let you know this evening if i get anymore popups or messages that McAfee caught a file trying to download.

I just clicked around other helpers and they are all using the same tutorial. Our problem is we are a small troup of volunteers who donate all time AND all tools, and we are severely out numbered by the lowlife who profit from infecting your computer, stealing your information, selling you rouge junk, etc.

I know this also, McAfee, who can not stop the stuff for $$$ they are paid, blocks the tools that clean the mess for them, kind of ironic is it not.
I think somewhere in the tut it is suggested to turn off ALL security programs, but I usually don't ask for that unless someone says something happened, then I tell them to turn of the program and allow the tool.
You may want to update McAfee and scan your system, perhaps if they can't stop the malware they can at least tell you your computer is clean?

If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.

Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.
Remove combofix from your computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean any infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update and run a system scan with McAfee to be sure it is working right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions:
