Hi there. Recently, we seem to have aquired Antivirus XP 2008.
This is a shared computer, between my mom and I. We each have a seperate account and I don't know if that might factor into the issue. But I've run HJT on my account and included the results.
We have run both Windows Defender and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both initially found the issue and claimed to have cleaned it up, however there are still lingering problems.
If I leave the computer alone for a period of time, I come back to the Blue Screen of Death that claims there are issues. I have to reboot. Also, we use dial-up and it has decided to disconnect us on a regular basis. When we attempt to redial, it will not allow us to do so and we have to reboot. If she switches over to her account from mine (or vice versa), it won't let us connect that way either. Again, we have to reboot.
And the display properties have lost all but three tabs. I can not change the desktop image. And the image is blue, with a yellow box stating there are viruses and to use a cleaner to get rid of them.
And when using the net, pop-ups plague us. Even though we have pop-up blockers with a yahoo toolbar, IE, and a Phishing filter.
I'm sure there are other issues I haven't come across as well.
So your help is Very Much Appreciated. I await it patiently.

Thank you.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

The scum has figured out how to hide the junk completely from HJT. We will have to look for it and will try combofix first.
I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do. This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

It may be the infection is showing in her user, and I will need to see a HJT log. I will let you know when to post it.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thank you for the quick response to my plea for help. I am downloading ComboFix now, it will take some time as we live in the dark ages and still use dial-up.:red:
I will post the log's as soon as I can.

Here are the results of ComboFix. On the surface I can see that the display properties tabs have all returned. I will post HJT log in the next post.

Thanks for returning your information, how is the computer running?

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Yes, I did see that on the initial scan.
I would like to fix that issue as well. However this computer is a refurbished Gateway, so we were not sent the software with it. It came, as is.
I have the XP discs for my computer (which is currently a giant paperweight), could I use that one?
Otherwise, I'll need to know where to get the Recovery Console.

Also, I've noticed there are sound issues now, as in No Sound.
What could this be a result of and is it possible to fix it?

Other than that, it seems I have no problems now. I haven't switched to the other account (my mom's) yet to see how that one looks.
I have to work tomorrow so I won't be able to do any work on this until Thursday.

Thanks!

If you would take the time to read the tutorial I provided you with:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
you would soon know that using those instructions Recovery Console can be installed on the computer using combofix.

1) Your system: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2

2) Tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

If you use Windows XP and do not have the Windows CD, ComboFix includes a method of installing the Windows Recovery console by downloading a file from Microsoft. To install the Windows Recovery Console when you do not have the Windows XP CD, please follow these instructions:
Click on the following link to go to Microsoft's Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

3) Windows XP Home Edition SP2
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=15491F07-99F7-4A2D-983D-81C2137FF464&displaylang=en (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=15491F07-99F7-4A2D-983D-81C2137FF464&displaylang=en)

Download to your Desktop then:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Thanks

Also, I've noticed there are sound issues now, as in No Sound.
What could this be a result of and is it possible to fix it?
Nothing we have done should have effected your sound. Check all connections, speakers.

Ah thanks. I'll admit when I clicked on the original link I skimmed it quickly (as I didn't have any more time to use the computer that afternoon) and saw the information about installing ComboFix and thought that was all it was. I did not look close enough.

So! Now I am installing the Recovery Console.

I'll be back.

Thank you for your help.
The recovery console has been installed and it seems that all issues are cleared up on my account.:bigthumb:
I will find out this evening if my mom's account is clear as well.

Now if I can just figure out the sound issue thing's will be perfect.

If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.
We have more to do once I see that.

Is your Mom's a user account on this same computer? If so, post a HJT log when signed in to that user account.

Do you have a sound icon in the system tray?

Thanks

How do I find C:\*CF-RC.txt*?

I won't be able to be online for the next couple of days due to work. I might be able to be online Sunday to post that and a log from her account. If not, then Monday at the latest.

Thanks.

There is no sound icon in the system tray.

2008-08-22, 03:08
1) Look on the C:\ drive for CF-RC.txt

2) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=return+volume+icon+to+system+tray&spell=1

3) If you have absolutely no sound, like even when you start the computer you can here the music from Windows, something is probably unplugged, use the troubleshooting information I posted earlier.

4) Also Start > Control Panel > Point your mouse at Sounds and Audio Devices and right click it > click OPEN > Make sure MUTE is not checked.
Choose the Audio Tab then click "Volume" make sure none of the MUTE boxes are checked.
Apply/OK your way out.

5) C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe You have MSN Instant Messenger, what version do you have and do you know how to use it?
Version > Open IM and click "Help" then "About Messenger"
The version number is on that window. Tell me what it is.
If we get that far depending on the version, there is a Audio and Video Setup (or Audio/Video Wizard) that will let you troubleshoot sound.

Let me know if you can follow this.

Thanks

I still cannot find the file CF-RC.txt. Under My Computer, there is now a seperate drive: Recovery (D): .

Ok I've already checked the Sounds under control panel. I've done the troubleshooting.
MSN states the speakers are not working properly or are in use by another program.

Control panel, sounds and audio, sounds; when I try to play a sound, I get the error:
Windows cannot play the (insert whichever sound here they all don't work) file. The file may be damaged or may use an unrecognized compression format. To resolve this, replace the file, or use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to Install Audio Compression.

Everything is plugged in. I tried a second set of speakers, and had no luck with them either.

I do not hear the start up music.
I heard earlier when I updated ComboFix the system beep.

When I attempt to play music with media player, I get this error message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

(Oddly enough this also happened to my computer before it crashed completely on me. I even tried a new Sound card and was told it was probably my motherboard. I think I have gremlins!)

Please read my instructions and follow them:

Is your Mom's a user account on this same computer? If so, post a HJT log when signed in to that user account.
All I needed was a HJT log, the rest of the information is not needed and cluttering the topic making it hard for me to work with it.

not seeing any problems.

Let me know about any malware issues at this point.

Sound Issues, you said:

This is not what I do, this has nothing to do with malware. I will suggest a couple of forums who may be able to help which are free.

I'm sorry if I cluttered the post. I was simply trying to give you all the information I could because I knew I would not be able to get on here for a couple days. And you had said we still had a ways to go.

I am not finding the temp file any longer. And it seems the computer is back to normal. I see no further malware issues.

I'm aware that sound is not what you do, that's not what this forum is about. So thanks for the sound issue links. I will check those out. I did a lot of google searching on them inititally but hit brick walls.

Do I need to keep the programs I've downloaded? Or can I uninstall them? (HJT, ComboFix, MalwareBytes.)

Again, thank you for all of your help. Thank you for taking your own time to help me out. You saved me a lot of time and money. :yahoo:

I suggest you keep HJT, it is a valuable diagnostic tool, here is a tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html

MBAM is a great, free scanner, your to keep or remove...your call.

Remove combofix from your computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

To be sure, clean System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Good luck with your sound issues.
