My computer shut down the other day and would only get up to the HP "blue screen of death" (as I've heard it called from many). I could get it to open in safe mode only once and ran the spybot scan with a great big congratulations, I also ran the malwarebytes scan with no problems. I know there is something going on because it's not wanting to start right. I finally got it to where it started up like it was brand new again so I came into your forum and saw that inorder to get help I needed to run the Hijack this, so I did and here are my results.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Hi Debra, first you need to know this may not be malware related, something else like out of date drivers, etc. may be causing your issues. If this is the case, I am limited in the help I can give and usually redirect to good Windows forums, places to get free diagnostic scans, etc. Let's look at what we have before we go to that.

1) Along with BSOD's almost always come error messages, this is Windows talking to us and I need to know those error messages word for word.
Here is a good website to keep: http://kadaitcha.cx/index.html
Lots of online resources are also available:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=troubleshoot+bsod&btnG=Google+Search

2) C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< your Java program is VERY BADLY out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

3) I am seeing no malware, but you said MBAM and Spybot S&D found nothing. This does not mean something could be there, hidden from HJT and not in the MBAM database, but this is unlikely. I see nothing in the HJT log except a bunch of HP clutter I suggest you remove (optional) and we will clean a little and go from there.

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

***many folks have issues removing the very old Java program, this tool will help if you do.
http://raproducts.org/

So, clean up, get your Java program up to date, and provide me with error message and any information you think will help.

I take it this is a different computer than the one Ken helped you with here: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=25302
Since Java was not out of date back then?

Thanks...Phil

Thank you for helping me. I have run another scan with spybot, after doing the things you asked me to do and I actually sat and watched the things it scanned. There are quite a few things in the computer that I'm unsure of what it is or where it is. there were many files scanned with the name virtumonde.sci and virtumonde.dll. I have not rebooted yet however, last time I did I got an error message saying my spysubtract is corrupt error # 0x8004043a. This is the same computer Ken helped me with.....the Java was out of date because the only way I could get the comptuer to boot up was by taking it back to the original settings and I've been a little worried about downloading anything to it because the first time I did that the other day Windows updated and needed to reboot and on the reboot it wouldn't get past the blue screen so I had to retart everything all over again. I will reboot it now and see if that error message is still there and if so I will write it down and put in here for you to see what it is, I'm not even sure I need spysubtract.

lol...Debra, the information that scrolls by when Spybot S&D is running is the database of items it looks for, not stuff on your computer.

Is your version up to date and are you fully immunuized when you run it?
Spybot-S&D 1.6 has arrived! 8. July 2008
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2008-07-08.html

If so, then look in the "Before you Post" tutorial, Post#2 down to the HJT log and run Spybot like that tutorial.
Here are some FAQ's if it helps:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html
I even have a youtube but it may be old because I see 1.4.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdKqwN61BJY

I can not help with SpySubtract having never run it but the only other time Google finds that error is assocated with the same tool:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=corrupt+error+%23+0x8004043a.&btnG=Google+Search
but the information is not in English.
I also notice this:
http://www.intermute.com/products/spysubtract.html
Do you own that program? Unless I am missing it I don't see running?

Post an uninstall list:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

I feel like an idiot now....lol....but that's good that it's only looking for those files....

I must be an idiot because I don't know if I have that program or not, for some reason it looks familiar but I don't know if it's on here.

The games and stuff on the list below do not get used ever. In fact everytime I've had to start my computer like new again I take them out, but I've been more worried about if I've got viruses or whatever before doing that again.

Uninstall list: I am looking for malware and security issues. It's a good chance for you to look for anything you no longer use, and uninstall it.

Adobe Acrobat - Reader 6.0.2 Update
Adobe Reader 6.0.1
Adobe Reader 9.0 <<< newest version, download it then uninstall the old stuff.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/

SpySubtract <<< there she be, why don't you unistall it, here is a good free program from Microsoft you can use for Spyware:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
If you install WD, thank the time to reviuew the information about it so you know how to use the program.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/support.mspx

That's all I see.

Good Morning Phil! How are you today?
I uninstalled the Spyware Guard and added the one you suggested yesterday. This morning my computer did updates and needed to reboot, I got the same error message from the Spyware Guard. Is it possible I need to find it somewhere else other than the add and remove programs to take it all the way out?

pskelley
2008-08-22, 16:32
OK, you have lost me:
I uninstalled the Spyware Guard <<< good program but I don't see it in your uninstall list?

SpySubtract <<< if you are talking about this program, and they are NOT the same, try looking here:

C:\Program Files\SpySubtract\ (just a guess) if it is there, delete the folder and contents.
Oops:
C:\Program Files\InterMute\SpySubtract\sslaunch.exe
If you don't use Intermute for anything else, delete that complete folder.

I can't see what you are doing without a HJT log.

Thanks

I'm sorry...everything was starting to look the same to me. I do realize they are different programs, just got a bit confused. I did have to go into the c drive and take that one out that I didn't want. Here is my HJT that I just ran.

Thanks, for your information:

1) If you installed Windows Defender, I do not see it running in the HJT log and it should be as it is a realtime spyware program.

2) SpywareGuard is a good program, read about it here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html
You should see a little red SG in the system tray indicating it is active and protecting you. I personally run this as a companion program to SG:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
These programs are freeware (unless you elect options they sell like auto-updating features) I do all updating myself and keep them free. They are not intended to replace a realtime program like Windows Defender.

When I look at your running processes, I believe you should see this information:

This is good information for everyone:
