Wife's laptop was running very slow. Didnt think it was virus as Norton was installed and we had always updated and scanned on regular basis. I decided to update to Norton 360. I was having difficulties uninstalling so I used Norton Removal Tool. Once this was done I noticed there was a Windows Update so I clicked on shield to install. This was for SP3. Before it could update, I received a message "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in Safe mode, or if Windows Installer Service is not correctly installed. Contact your support personal for assistance." I thought it was a bit odd so I used her laptop to search for help. Several times I would click on a link found with Google and would be directed to different sites. I have yet to get the WIS fixed but feel as though I need to fix viruses, malware... before moving on. I have ran Spybot S&D in safe mode and then ran Hijackthis after rebooting and logging in as administrator. I am hoping to get this complete before loading Norton 360. The following is my HJT log:

I do appreciate your help as I feel like I am a smart guy but completely stupid when it comes to how to fight this off. I know my sons computer has same issue as he has same problems running same Norton. I will address that another day. Thanks again for your help.

Hello and welcome to Safer Networking.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these vendors NOW:

1)Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)
2)avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)

Download and install only one!

Step # 1: Disable Teatimer

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

This is a two step process.
First step: Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version : Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
If your firewall raises a question, say OK
In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
OK any prompts.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Step # 2: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Step # 3: Download and Run ComboFix

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis logand the Uninstall List so we can continue cleaning the system.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

I tried to install Norton 360 again since I have it already and have 2 licences left, but I could not get it to load. I was finally able to get Avira to download (I could not download from several sites). I did download, update, install and run. I have attached the logs:

Seems your missing an important part of your operating system. Let's get it reinstalled in case you ever need it.
Nothing is going to change on your computer other than we are going to reinstall the Recovery Console.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/KB310994.gif

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

At the next prompt, click 'No'.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC_whatnext.gif

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Step # 1: Run CFScript

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=226084&postcount=4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\krqwrvps]

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Note: This CFScript is for use on MatthewMeeker's computer only! Do not use it on your computer.

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Recovery Console Log.
2. ComboFix Log that appears after Step 1 has been completed.
3. A fresh HiJackThis Log taken after Step 1 has been completed.

I performed the steps for the Recovery Console but I do not find the CF-RC log. I did a search and a shortcut was in the recent folder but the file was gone. Sorry. I hope this does not make another step for you. I cannot imagine how many of these you must see. I appreciate your help.

I performed the steps for the Recovery Console but I do not find the CF-RC log. I did a search and a shortcut was in the recent folder but the file was gone. Sorry. I hope this does not make another step for you. I cannot imagine how many of these you must see. I appreciate your help.

It looks like you have installed the Recovery Console sucessfully as your latest ComboFix Log doesn't say that the Recovery Console is not installed.

Step # 1: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step # 2: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [asvvhfaa] %systemroot%\asvvhfaa.exe

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

Step # 3: Deleting Files/Folders

I need you to use Windows Explorer to delete the file I have marked in Red(if found):

C:\asvvhfaa.exe

Also look for that file in the C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32 folders. If it is found in either or both folders, then delete the file.

Step # 4 Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
You can also access the log by doing the following:

Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
Click on the Logs tab.
Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
Click Open.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. MalwareBytes' Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.3 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please make sure that all programs are closed when installing Java.

Click here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) to visit Java's website.
Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7. Click on Download.
Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
Click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
Double click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.
After the Java installation has finished, please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.
Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is the computer doing, any problems?

I downloaded both programs (Adobe 9.0 JRE update), but was unable to install due to following error: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windwos Installer is not correctly installed. Contact you support personnel for assistance." Without the JRE update, I could not perform the Kaspersky scan. So no changes have been made. Any ideas on Windows Installer Service? Thank you for all your help so far.

Try following the instructions in this link (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346) and if the Windows Installer Service is fixed, then install Adobe and Java and then run Kaspersky. Post back the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HiJackThis Log in your next post. If it doesn't work, let me know that as well.

How long have you been learning the malware/virus trade?

I joined Malware Removal University (http://www.malwareremoval.com/) in January of 2007 and it took me about 8 months of studying, training, and doing practice HJT logs before I was promoted to do live HJT logs with supervision. In January of 2008, I was promoted to where I could do HJT logs across different security forums without supervision. Overall, I've been doing this for a year and a half. And its an ongoing process, one where you never stop learning and adapting as old malware changes and new malware comes in.

The one file that Kaspersky found was in ComboFix's Qoobox folder, which is where Combofix keeps its quarantined files. I'll have you remove that folder and ComboFix in this post.

Since you report no more problems with the computer and your latest HJT log looks clean, you are good to go. :)

To remove ComboFix, do the following:

Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /u & click OK

Delete CFScript.txt from your computer.

You can re-enable TeaTimer as well.

Please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..

Clearing your restore points is not something you should do on a regular basis. Normally, this process only needs to be done after clearing out an infestation of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install SpywareBlaster SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line Anti Malware (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=54#54)
Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Please read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=5931)
Please read Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial41.html)
Please read Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html)
If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser: Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) or
Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/).
If you decide to use either FireFox or Opera, it is very important that you keep them up to date and check frequently for updates of the browser of your choice.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If your computer was infected by a website, a program, IM, MSN, or p2p, check this site because it is Time To Fight Back (http://spyware-free.us/2006/01/time-to-fight-back.html). Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here's a good website to read about Malware prevention:

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

Good luck!

Thank you for all your help. I have followed your final steps and have printed your suggestions to read over this weekend. Without people like you, people like me would end up using the internen much less which I think would be a shame. I do hope you have a nice weekend. Thanks again.
