View Full Version : Hello All, I'm new, and am in need of some help...

I was directed here by a friend after I told him of some troubles I was having with my computer. Recently, ive been having a lot of pop-ups make it through my filters. These don't just show up while browsing, they often will start up when the computer is idle on my desk. There are about a dozen, and they seem to be incresin gin frequency exponentially. From one a day 2 weeks ago, to now one or more every time I change a page or stay on a page for a short time.

I must warn you, I am a complete PC stooge. My knowledge is extreemly limited. I've managed to scratch my way around, and found a few .exe programs in add/remove that came about around the time I started having problems. I killed those, and so far, have been pop-up free for about 4 hrs (a record) After I ran my PC-cillin antivirus/anti spyware which came back clean:rolleyes: but then ran a Kaspersky scan which has yielded 10 infected files, and 2 threat names (in only the 'Critical Area') so far.

My question which I hope someone can help me with is how do I now isolate these files, and delete/quarantine them?

I appreciate you taking the time to look at this,

Thanks!
Eric

Here's the log

Please read Before YouPost (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

There may be more hiding from us, lets do a few more things. No need to code or quote the logs, just paste them in.

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

As I was trying to download/run ComboFix, I didn't get my antivirus/spyware program stopped in time and I got 2 virus (one Trojan, can't remember the other) detected warnings, which then aborted the ComboFix download.

Is this why I need to disable my antivirus? Or were these real threats and I should not try to re-download the ComboFix from your link?

Hope I'm not frustrating you to death, I really appreciate you helping me with all of this!

Good Morning,

Is this why I need to disable my antivirus? Or were these real threats and I should not try to re-download the ComboFix from your link? Combofix does not contain a virus but some of the files to remove them can be flagged as one thats why its so important to disable all Anti Virus and Anti Spyware programs.

Hope I'm not frustrating you to death, I really appreciate you helping me with all of this! Nope, thats why we're here, I work with people with all sorts of computer experience from the novice to the experts so not to worry

Thanks, was up your way a few years ago, beautiful country.:)

OTMoveIt <---Drag it to the trash

ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
