View Full Version : Looking for help with Virtumonde

Well, I've been trying to get rid of Virtumonde for the past couple days, but I can't seem to get rid of it. I've run Spybot (in safe mode, regular windows, and immediately upon startup), Lavasoft's free version of Ad-Aware, and Symantec Antivirus several times each, and while the scanners always pick up something, it doesn't look like they permanently remove it. At least now I am able to use the internet; up until recently, my browsers (Firefox and IE) were not functioning properly. I should also add that I performed CCleaner's registry key fix a couple of times as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is my HJT log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure your read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time.
I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do. This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy. Looks like you got some of it but it is still in the HJT log: C:\WINDOWS\system32\lgcdsoid.dll

1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

3) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information, proceed carefully and in the numbered order.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), there is no need to post the CFScript, I will know from the HJT log if the script worked.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O9 - Extra button: PokerStars - {3AD14F0C-ED16-4e43-B6D8-661B03F6A1EF} - C:\Program Files\PokerStars\PokerStarsUpdate.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: lmjzlt.dll <<< may be gone

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Please tell me how the computer is running now.

Thanks...Phil

Note: I am posting this from another computer. I am keeping the internet use of the infected computer to a minimum (as you suggested), I am just using it to download the files you are telling me to.

I should tell you that when I started up the infected computer, it froze. I had to turn it off and on and reboot it a few times to get it to work in order to follow the next set of steps you gave me. Once I got windows working, I proceeded to follow the steps you gave me. I got as far as ComboFix starting it's scan (after dragging the CFScript file into the icon), but then my computer froze. ComboFix was doing nothing, and when I tried clicking on something with the mouse, the cursor froze as well. So, I decided to turn the infected computer off and back on, booted up windows, and started over (I made a new CFScript file, because the old one was gone). This time, it looks like the ComboFix scan completed (that's what the window said, and it was just making the log), but then I got a full blue screen that said windows detected a problem and had to shut down. I couldn't read everything that it said in time before it shut down, but it said something about dumping physical memory. When Windows booted back up, I got a window that said "The system has recovered from a seriour error", and I selected not to send the error report. I'm not sure if this was supposed to happen, so I decided to stop here and tell you about it.

Let me know if I should start over or just proceed normally.

Thanks for all your help.

Give it another try, you had no issues the first time you ran combofix? All we are doing is running a script to remove one item which could probably be left? I'll know more once I see the MBAM report but the computer should not be acting like that and you may have issues other than malware?

I am interest in the exact error messages you are receiving "word for word", it is not unheard of to get a BSOD, happens to me once in a while.

Update: If you’re puzzled because you’re getting STOP errors (the Blue Screen of Death) and they scroll off your screen before you can read the details, here’s the solution: Get details about the Blue Screen of Death.

Very possible this could be cause by an out of date drive, here is a free tool that will check that for you, that and out of date programs:
https://psi.secunia.com/
Let's wait until we have the computer stable before we consider installing new software.

Thanks...Phil

Okay, I gave it another shot, and everything went smoothly. It looks like my web browser isn't keeping me from websites either. The logs are below. I'll restart after posting this and see how the restart goes and add that to the thread as well.

Restart went well, and web browser is still working fine. However, I'll wait until confirmation from you that things are okay.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. MBAM did find a little junk but most of that stuff is in combofix quarantine and infected System Restore files and we will clean those areas soon.
I cannot see anything in the HJT log that looks like malware, but a few of your programs I do not know. Take a look down your Running Processes and make sure you know them all.

How much RAM is installed on this computer?
Right click MyComputer then click Properties. Ram count is lower right corner.

This is the next issues we need to look at:
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

My computer has 1.96 GB of RAM installed. I installed the Recovery Console via ComboFix. Here is the log:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

That should be plenty of RAM, I only have 1.25 GB's myself. RC was correctly installed, here is a little information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Scan with MBAM again to make sure we missed nothing, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update Symantec and scan your system to be sure it is running correctly and scanning clean. If you have any problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

For the most part, things seem to be working pretty well. However, when I try to run Symantec, it says that an error occurred while loading savrt32.dll, and once I click "OK" on the error message, Symantec closes. When I went to Symantec's website to troubleshoot, the methods they gave me didn't fix the problem. I've also noticed that I seem to be missing at least one device driver. I'm not sure if there's anything you guys can do about that, but I just thought I'd give you the status update. Other than that, everything seems to be working fine, in fact, it looks like Windows boots up a lot faster now.

Savrt32.dll <<< that is a Symantec file, files do go missing or get corrupted, malware likes to damage the antivirus program, makes it hard for you to run it to identify the junk. Are you dealing with Tech Support?
http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/index.jsp
I have never run Symantec/Norton so I will not make their decisions for them. My suggestion would be to reinstall the program but it would be best if they tell you that so you know how they want you to do it and they are there for support if you have any problem.
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/dll/21891-Savrt32dll.html

I've also noticed that I seem to be missing at least one device driver.
How do you know this? If you are viewing this in Device Manager, to even begin to advise you I would need more information. Descripe the exact steps you are taking to get that information (missing at least one device driver)

Thanks
