Hello, I am trying to help a Coworker clean his home computer out. The computer had WinAntivirus2008 and a whole bunch of other Spyware/Virus. When he first brought the computer to me everything was hidden, i.e. My Computer, Explorer, Taskmanager, etc, etc. I was finally able to get Spybot and Malware Bytes installed and cleaned a bunch of stuff out, but there is still other stuff left. Spybot no longer detects anything, but I scanned with Kaspersky online scan and that reports some stuff left. I will post a HJT log and the Kaspersky Log. If someone can please take a look and advise as to what I need to do next to clean this computer out. Thank you in advance!

Hi shwabo

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) and save
it to desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit to close ATF-Cleaner.

We will begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hello Shaba, thank you for helping me with this. I have followed all your instructions and will post the log files below. I have one question. There are two profiles on the computer we are working on. Does ATF-Cleaner and ComboFix need to be run from both profiles, or is running them in one profile sufficiant? Thanks again for your help!

ComboFix:

If you ran it from admin account, that is enough :)

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ig.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\6C.tmp

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad]
"akBJJszAU"=-

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Shaba, everything ran smoothly. ComboFix prompted me to update to a newer version which I did when it first ran. I hope this was ok to do. Here are the log files.

Yes, that is fine :)

Have you set these?

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{0F894104-4D6F-4FBA-B806-707EB25A5775}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{0F894104-4D6F-4FBA-B806-707EB25A5775}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

They are OpenDNS DNS servers, which means that your internet connection comes via OpenDNS now.

No I haven't set any of those. I do believe that they have Frontier DSL if that helps any.:)

Thanks for the info.

Then we'll check this:

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads, post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{0F894104-4D6F-4FBA-B806-707EB25A5775}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{34E74477-966D-427F-837F-B641595C560E}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{0F894104-4D6F-4FBA-B806-707EB25A5775}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log.

OK. I set the DNS to Obtain Automatically, and ran HJT. Only one of the 3 entries (O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{34E74477-966D-427F-837F-B641595C560E}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222) you had listed showed up in HJT so I checked that one and clicked Fix. I will post the HJT log below. I have another question. Do you think I should delete the second user acct AND profile before we go any further? I know you had mentioned that as long as I was running everything from an Admin account (both accts are Admin) that it would be ok, but I logged into the second profile, and everything is still disabled, it still says Virus Alert by the clock, My Computer and all the drives are still hidden, etc etc. (I hope I didn't re-infect the computer by doing so). I think the owner told me it was ok to get rid of his user acct & profile (he said there was nothing he needed to save on his side), but definately save his wife's profile. I will double check with him tomorrow at work. I've been running everything from the wife's side. Here is the HJT Log. I ran HJT BEFORE I logged into his profile. Sorry this is so long, but I think it's important for you to know what I did so that you can provide the proper assistance to help me. Thanks again for your time, patience and help!

I spoke to my co-worker today and he gave me the ok to delete his acct. He said he has absolutly nothing on his side that needs to be saved. If you think this will make the task of cleaning this computer out easier, then we can delete it. If not I can try to get HJT to run on his side and post the log file. What do you think?

Do this below in his profile, please:

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

So far his side seems good. Her side however has lost the Icon for My Computer and Windows Explorer. The Icon itself is there, but it is a default white icon with the 3 dots in the middle for My Computer, and what looks like the DOS Icon for Windows Explorer. When you goto the properties of either one and click change icon, you can browse to explorer.exe, open it, see the icons, click on the one you want, but then it won't change it. I think at some point Explorer.exe got corrupted. Is there a fix for this?

This (http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-11184-0.html?forumID=47&threadID=182437) might help.

Also there is no antivirus installed:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.homepage) - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Yes, I am aware that there is no AV software on this computer. They have purchased Norton 360 I believe, but could not install it because the computer was to infected. Also they have ordered more RAM becuase the computer currently has 256MB in it. Hardly enough to even boot it up. When I return the computer to them they will install the AV Software. I will install all the MS Patches and the RAM before returning the computer to them. Is there anything else that needs to be done? BTW, the Icon for My Computer is there, it just doesn't look like My Computer. It looks like a little white sheet with three dots in the middle of it. When you goto the Properties page and click Change Icon, then select the Icon that looks like my computer, nothing happens. Perhaps installing SP3 will replace explorer.exe and fix it? I'm not sure. Thanks!

You may want to try this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43051.html) for that My Computer icon issue.

OK. I have resolved the My Computer and Windows Explorer Icon issue by doing the following:

My Computer Icon:

Right click on desktop
Left click on Properties
Click the Desktop Tab
Click Customize Desktop button
Highlight My Computer (left click once on it)
then click the Restore Default button.
Click OK
Click Apply
Click OK
DONE!

Windows Explorer Icon:

Click Start>My Computer
Click Tools>Folder Options...
Click the View Tab then click on Show Hidden Files and Folders
Click Apply>OK
Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data
and delete the IconCache.db file.
Do this for each profile on the computer.
Reboot.
After Rebooting I returned it back to Do Not Show Hidden Files and Folders
Done!

Is there anything else that needs to be done? I have installed SP3 and I am now waiting for the RAM. Otherwise it seems pretty good so far. :bigthumb:

Great :)

See below for my instructions:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/) (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor (http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html)
3) Sunbelt/Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)
4) Agnitum (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
5) ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za) (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
