View Full Version : help with virtumonde
im out of ideas, time for the pros to take a stab at this:D
ran spybot, founda few infections, cleaned em up, manually cleaned some reg entries that persisted, ran the windows recovery and removed a few dll's that insisted on staying around.. still left with 2 reg entries that keep coming back

just wanted to add a few notes here
i came into work today and my pc restarted(not sure what happened) and now i have an error that says "error loading C:\windows\system32\sxdkgbjb.dll" which was one of the random named dll's that spybot had located as infected.
so it looks like, kinda what i had thought, mostof it is gone, but some reg keys must still be there at startup..
new hj logfile per my thread in the waiting room, sorry again guys

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, when I looked at this HJT log Scan saved at 7:03:51 PM, on 8/25/2008 I did NOT see TeaTimer running or I would have disabled it before running combofix?
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).
3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
4) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sxdkgbjb.dll
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-
Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(may be missing, removed by the script)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [3404b511] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sxdkgbjb.dll",b
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: ymofai.dll jcfaww.dll
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
Looks like you have MBAM onboard, no need to download it again, just follow these directions.
7) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the combofix log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.
Tell me how the computer is running.

im doing this while running my cellphone store,
I strongly suggest you work on your computer only when you can give it your undivided, uninterrupted
attention. It only takes one mistake and I am certainly not rushing you:sad:
Thanks...Phil
i hear ya, i have a backup pc here that im using for my pos and crap, and my employee is doing all the customer work, i just had to help someone while he was busy so i glanced over the part where it said i didnt need to reinstall.
cf is set, hj isset, malware is running now..
thansk again for the patience with me, i had to tell my employee, again, not to touch the infected pc, he tried to help and instead throws me out of wack, i had disabled tea timer, and he popped it back on thinking it was supposed to be there.. lol

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. While we can surely run scans forever, the two we used are very good with this infection. combofix did it's job so MBAM had nothing to report, which is slightly ususual because it usually reports the junk in combofix quarantine and usually at least a few infected System Restore files? Keep an eye on things and while you do that, this is the next bridge we must cross.
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif
Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC_whatnext.gif
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC_AllDone.gif
Thanks...Phil
i do have all my windows cd's, but for the sake of being thorough, i might as well go this route and see what comes up.. ill post hte log once its done.
so to make sure i did this right, i had the windows cd, i installed hte rc off the cd, said it was installed fine, and just ran cf. did i miss anything? hte instrauctions had a bunch of other steps for downloading the rc, so i hope i didnt skip anything... no need to restart or anything right?

Yeah, you missed this:
Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO
Remove combofix from your computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

To be sure, clean System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update Symantec and run a system scan to be sure the program is running right and scanning clean. If you have any issues with the program, contact tech support for instructions:
