View Full Version : Sluggish computer, possible infection.
Ah, a new computer, a new problem.
Anyways, my computer seems to be running exceptionally slowly recently and I can't quite find the problem myself. My antivirus system occasionally finds trojans to delete, but it seems to not be removing the problem entirely. The threat is likely minor, but I would rather be safe than blindsided by a virus I can't detect.

Ah, a new computer, a new problem
I need to make you aware you are infected, this: O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1 is a marker for a wareout infection and there is other junk. If this computer is still under warranty, about anything you do could invalidate that warranty. If you are unsure, contact Dell for clarification.
If you want me to proceed, since it has been four days, post a new HJT log.
Thanks
Rereading my statement, it didn't make much sense out of context. What I meant to say was that this is the second computer I own that I'm trying to get fixed, not that it's recently purchased and has been infected already. The computer is by no means new, so I will proceed with your prescribed treatment.
Here's the new HJT:

2) May be a hidden rootkit with this wareout infection, I have not cleaned this version in a while. We will see as we proceed.
Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Save it to yourDesktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.
(wait until you finish to post the logs)
3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, everything looks good to me but I would like to have one more tool check for any problems with the Hosts file:
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm
Post only the C:\rapport.txt
While I am looking at that, please scan with Avira to make sure it is running right and scanning clean, just let me know. Once I see that report, if the Hosts file is fine, I will get you on your way.
You may also delete Fixwareout from your computer.
Thanks
Here's the log. I will scan with Avira in the meantime, as it will probably take a few hours.

Thanks for returning this information, Smitfraudfix finds nothing wrong with the Hosts files, but it did located this junk:
C:\WINDOWS\secure32.html FOUND ! <<< see if you can navigate to that item and delete the file in red. Let me know it has been done.
Thanks
Okay, C:\WINDOWS\secure32.html has been deleted.
Avira ran quicker than usual, but still found one trojan. The trojan required multiple confirmations to delete. Unsure as to whether the trojan is completely gone, or if it has relocated itself/rendered itself undetectable for the moment.
The virus information as provided by Avira:
Virus: TR/Trash.Gen
Date discovered: 18/07/2007
Type: Trojan
In the wild: Yes
Reported Infections: Low
Distribution Potential: Low
Damage Potential: Low
Static file: No
Engine version: 7.04.00.44

I am not sure either, I cannot believe Avira does not give the location of an item it finds. The only thing I can do is run a better scan than that.
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Then post it here.
Thanks
Here's the report from Avira, it contains file locations for the Trojan. Not sure if this renders the need for another scan moot or not, but I thought I should post it.

Looks like Avira is seeing infected System Restore files, which Windows protects if they are infected or not. Clean those like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
and the other two items look to be benign, here is some information so you know what they are:
C:\hiberfil.sys
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hiberfil.sys&btnG=Search
C:\pagefile.sys
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!

Once SR has been clean, if you no longer receive messages from Avira, and the computer is running as you wish, we can make the additional scan optional.
I'll post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.
