Hello Spybot volunteers.

In advance I wish to say I appreciate you efforts. I have started getting pop-ups which looking in to it appears to be virus related. I think I have done everything that the instructions required but please contact me if there is anything that is missing or needs doing. This virus appears to have disabled my ability to run my usual virus checker and I think it is disabling automatic updates.

Thanks again all.

S.

Hi spookmeister

Rename HijackThis.exe to spookmeister.exe and post back a fresh HijackThis log taken in normal mode, please :)

Hi Shaba.

Thanks very much - When you say Normal Mode I assume you mean instead of Safe Mode with N/W.

I'll do that when I am home this evening.

I knew I'd get something wrong!

Hi Shaba.

I hope this is correct. Having gone through the process again I'm sure I entirely understood the bit about naming HJT as spookmeister.exe. Sorry if it's not. S.

Yes, renaming wasn't successful, unfortunately.

Rename HijackThis.exe to spookmeister.exe by doing the following;

Navigate here using Windows Explorer (windows button + E) or My Computer -> Local Disk C: -> C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Right-click on the HijackThis.exe
Choose from the pull-down menu; "Rename"
And now Rename HijackThis.exe to spookmeister.exe
When you've renamed HijackThis, open HijackThis again.
Take a fresh HijackThis log (click Do a system scan and save a log file)
Post the fresh HijackThis log here.

Create own folder for HijackThis to Desktop and move it into that folder.

After that:

We will begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Shaba.

I sent you a pm about my last couple of posts. You are way too quick for me.

I now understand what I should have done with the renaming thing but could I just ask you to clarify are you still needing me to do the spookmeister.exe thing or is your most recent post an explanation of the next step?

I am sorry.

Yes, follow my previous instructions as spookmeister.exe is now on desktop:

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Desktop\spookmeister.exe

Create own folder for it like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Desktop\HijackThis\spookmeister.exe

And then continue with combofix instructions, please :)

Hi Shaba.

I have another little problem. I have tried going through the process of installing the Recovery Console (as per combofix suggests) but I get the following prompt "Windows Setup - Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered."

What does this mean? Could it be I already have it installed?

I have just read a tutorial about how to remove Recovery Console and it appears that I already have a folder called /cmdcons on the main partition of the HD.

Shaba.

As I already appear to have Recovery Console installed I am slightly confused which is the next step to conduct. I am using the instructions from the bleepingcomputer.com link.

Shaba

If you have, then just continue with combofix installation & running instructions :)

Hi Shaba.

Okay I have gone through the instructions but I have one last question. Am I meant to be running combofix from normal mode because I don't have an option to run combofix from the recovery console which I thought the process was telling me I should be doing.

Thanks,

S.

Hey Shaba.

Dude!

Unless I am very much mistaken you have done it - you have gotten rid of all my woes.

Out of curiosity I ran Spybot and I have nothing - except for a doubleclick cookie.

Thanks so much.

I take it these logs that I have just posted will show whether there is still a problem.

Looks very good :)

But we run one online scan to be sure.

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Not as bad as it looks :)

Most of them are in ComboFix quarantine.

Delete these unless you need them (they are mail bases):

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Documents\backup.pst
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\backup.pst

Empty this folder:

C:\QooBox\Quarantine\

Delete this:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Downloads\FOOTY\PcastSetup\pCastCtl.dll

Empty Recycle Bin.

Still problems?

Hi Shaba - Prompt as always!

Should I just delete these assorted files and folders by going in to windows explorer?

You say "Still problems?" - Should I rerun Kaspersky to check.

Thanks,
S.

"Should I just delete these assorted files and folders by going in to windows explorer?"

Yes :)

"You say "Still problems?" - Should I rerun Kaspersky to check."

No need. I mean here "visible" problems/malware problems.

I have deleted the files and folders as advised.

...I mean here "visible" problems/malware problems.

I'm sorry but I am unsure what you mean by this - Do I need to do anything further? Am I completely clean now?

Thanks,
S.

Automatic updates are back on?

WHOOO HAAAA!

Shaba - you're the man!

I no longer have nasty pop-ups it seems.

May I ask a few last questions before I pop off to the "Donate" page.

I have/use a virus checker as supplied by my broadband supplier. How do I know if it is doing it's job properly and stopping virus' etc? I have also never used Kaspersky. What exactly is it? Is it the best around?

Thanks,
S.

No antivirus can find all malware. Then it comes into prevention. I will give you soon tips for that.

Kaspersky is one of the best, yes.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://www.bfccomputers.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1644)

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://www.bfccomputers.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1645)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
