View Full Version : Malware - bad Starter with Antivirus Xp 2008

Hello -

My computer got infected after pressing on one of those links that masks itself as though it comes from fedex.
I know I got the Antivirus XP 2008 virus, and it *looks* though it may be cleaned, but the system is still acting strange.
I had a couple of other things that got downloaded as well. I have run search and destroy (effectively I may add) but as I mentioned I am not sure I am out of the woods yet
I sincerly appreciate your help. You guys do a great job

I don't see Antivirus XP 2008 virus but we will check for it, but I see this:

There may also be a rootlit involved? This is new to me, let's see what combofix does with it.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Hello -

I am sorry, I should have mentioned it earlier. I also seem to have another virus/malware that's brings up a popup message saying "shutdown NT Authority\system dcom" and it counts down from a minute and shuts the machine down. To prevent that from happening I changed the date back a few days, so the count down starts from 7 days before today.

The output is the latest output, I copied straight after hijackthis completed, so this is the latest output

What is the date in the system tray? Mouse ove the clock. If it does not say todays date, set the clock. Right click, then click adjust time and date.

Post that error message exactly as you get it "word for word"

Post a new HJT log that has todays date on it.

I reset the date/time back to the current date and time and re-ran hijackthis. I think happens only when I run a Anti Spyware such as Ad-aware. Not sure if it happens with spybot, not all the time, not sure what triggers of that message. It appears to be very intermittent

But when it does it does not give me much time to try and fix anything else or run any of the utilities. Besides it could be that combofix has fixed it.
I was checking online when I did get the message, and below is what it said.

Thanks for that feedback, likely the malware is causing it and you are not the only one getting it, have a look:

Look at that information for a solution and I will continue to look at malware as the reason.

The only thing I see in the HJT log is an out of date Java program which is dangerous.

but that is surely not causing the eror message.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

You seeing that everything is cleaned up huh? I guess I just don't trust it because it came back after I thought it was cleaned out.

Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

It seems to be running better. I have not seen anything unusual. I will take your advise and follow the rest of the recommendations and post the logs once I complete them. FYI, this may be Monday

Hello -

I finally got Recovery console installed from the windows CD, but I dont see the logs you were referring to in the C:\ directory.
Please advise on next steps, thanks in advance for your help

Thanks for posting your feedback, be aware that the instructions I posted were for using combofix to install Recovery Console if your DID NOT have a Windows CD. With the method you used, no log is provided.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Just in case and are infected, clean System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run MBAM to make sure we got all of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update Symantec and scan the system to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have any issues with the program, contact tech support for instructions.
