After reading the stickys on forum usage, I should tell you that I am the "IT" person for a very small business. I have recently had to integrate two machines into our network(to make a total of 4), one of which was rather infested. After cleaning up as much as I could with my limited knowledge, I'm hoping to get some advice on a few weird HJT entries, and how to remove the one part of Smitfraud.C-CoreService that I have so far failed at. Thanks in advance.

Oh, I should also say that I tried to use the commonly recommended ComboFix against the SmitFraud, and it caused bluescreen almost immediately. Symptoms of the machine are constant IE popups, regardless of the browser being used. Spybot is finding core.cache.dsk remaining in system32\drivers.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

I see a couple of different infections so this may take a while.

Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, you said:

My instructions were:

I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more.

1) Please review the instructions, expecially this:

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
From the looks of the log you posted, "Word Wrap" was turned on.
2) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

3) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

( you may wish to turn McAfee off until combofix is downloaded)

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Looking any better?

Looking any better?
Yeah but we have a hidden rootkit driver causing this malware not to be removed:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk . . . . failed to delete
Usually we can tell it by the size, but it appears the hackers are hiding it better. SDFix found the item but could not remove it because the rootkit must be removed with it. I am looking at this one:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ip6fww.sys [2008-03-10 86016] <<< but that date looks like it has been on the computer a while. Let's find out if that driver is bad.
Make sure you can see all files and folders:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Scan that file in red and post the results:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ Here are two more scnners if jotti is busy:
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/

MBAM will usually show the hidden it, run it also:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Thanks, keep me posted on any symptoms of malware. The one we are trying to remove usually causes popups.

I just want to say that I appreciate how much you're doing to help me out. The popups seem to have stopped for the moment, so let's hope this last fix did the job. And yes, this computer has been infected for quite some time.

All three online scanners (jotti, kaperspy, and virustotal) recieved 0 bytes from the ip6fww.sys file, like they couldn't see it. Jotti said "0 bytes received on ip6fww.sys. Either a firewall or malware is blocking attepts to scan file". I made sure that the firewall was turned off so that it wouldn't interrupt the scan, but still no luck.

I then dled and ran Malwarebytes' AntiMalware, which found quite a few infections. It was able to fix all but two (core.cache.dsk and ip6fww.sys), but prompted that it would delete them both upon reboot. Considering I haven't seen a popup yet, I'm hoping that is the case. Here are the logs.

It is frustrating to have to look at this: No action taken.

Run a new scan, follow the directions:

When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
and post it.

Navigate to this item:

C:\WINDOWS\?icrosoft\l?gonui.exe <<< it may be gone, but if it there, it is PurityScan adware, delete that folder >> ?icrosoft since it is using a wild care to confuse and hide, look in the folder for this item >> l?gonui.exe so you will know you have the right folder.

Ran the new scan, no objects detected. Just so I know we aren't misunderstanding each other, I did make sure that everything was checked last time. Malwarebytes' said it was unable to fix them until the system rebooted, which I'm assuming it did. Here is the log just to be sure :

I found the only folder that matched the ?icrosoft in question (which appeared as Microsoft). It was empty.

Thanks for providing this information, it does look like MBAM was able to delete those files on reboot. Before we remove combofix , let give it 24 hours or so to make sure.

Update McvAfee and scan your system to make sure it is running right and scanning clean. Let me know in a day, if there are no malware symptoms, we will remove combofix, clean System Restore and post closing information for you.

Thanks...Phil

No symptoms at all. Updated and ran McAfee, which came out clean as a whistle. Looks like we succeeded. Thanks ; D
