Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16705)
Hi

Just to explain - I have been given my friend's Laptop to sort out! He complained about "Slow startup an closedown, sometimes it refused to close so he let it run until the battery went flat and it shut down itself. Also Internet connections were not useable due to the number of popups that were happening. He purchased Norton 2009 in the hope that this would sort it out but from what I can see this was not properly installed.

He passed it to me this morning in the hope I can sort it out for him.

I have installed and run the following:-

1) Adaware
2) Spybot Search and Destroy
3) All Microsoft XP updates to SP3 ( His "latest" update was SP1!)
4) IE 7 (You'll see why later!)
5) Malaware

Whilst things have improved I'm not there yet. Booting up still takes ages an cloing down reports (eventually) that iexplore.exe is not responding - so I have to terminate it to closedown/re-boot.

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You have a LOP/C2 Media infection at the least.
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=C2.lop&threatid=8144

I am not sure that is causing the startup/shutdown issues but it is very possible. Here is what I need to be able to proceed:

1) Read the directions pinned (sticky) to the top of the forum and posted above.

2) Post a complete HJT log (you have cut off the header which contains information we need to see in order to proceed)
Notepad > Edit > Select All > Copy/Paste all highlited information.

Thanks

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Please Download NoLop to your desktop from one of the links below...

http://www.spywareedge.net/nolop/NoLop.exe
http://www.spywaretimes.com/Tools/Download/Anti-malwareTools/NoLop!/
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=get16

First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
Double click NoLop.exe to run it.
Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh HijackThis log

--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program. --

Thanks for returning your information, proceed carefully and in the numbered order.

Before we start, have a look at this information:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/Findfast.exe-2855.html
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
I would delete that file in red it were my computer.

This is an unsafe location, follow my directions to locate it safely.
C:\Documents and Settings\Margaret Joensen\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe

1) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Ok

Got as far as delete the 4 Curb Loud Idol directory but I get an error message informing me that "Ace Math.exe is being used by another person or program.

I thought that I'd better stop there in compliance to proceed with caution!

Please follow the directions I posted for you and delete that junk.

Thanks

Sorry - I tried to delete the junk but XP was not having it! I finally managed by downloading and using "Unlocker Assistant". Interestingly the file which was using it was iexplore.exe (the same file as was troublesome on shutdown). Needless to say shutdown now works seamlessly!

Currently I'm running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and will post logs when it eventually completes it operations.

Looks like one item got missed or did not get deleted. Understand HJT is a process manager, when you remove the item with HJT that stops the process so the file can be deleted, but you must go straight to that file while the process is stoped, (DO NOT RESTART)
To be sure, let's do this:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [More Web] C:\DOCUME~1\MARGAR~1\APPLIC~1\POPBOW~1\Win Rule Dumb.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.
I have to guess on the name but you can figure that out.

C:\DOCUME~1\MARGAR~1\APPLIC~1\POPBOW~1\Win Rule Dumb.exe

C:\
Documents and Settings\
Margar <<< the complete name of the user, look in that folder for
Application Date <<< look in that folder for
POPBOW <<< a folder like this and it may have more than six letters but no other folder will start like that. Delete that folder and the contents.

Post a new HJT log and some feedback, how is the computer running.

Thanks

I am wondering if you know where you got this infection? This is usually how folks get it:

OK

I followed your instructions - could not find *.dumb.exe anywhere so I must presume it no longer exists. I did find POPBOW but it was reported as any empty folder - I deleted it anyway.

I really have no idea how this computer got infected - it's not mine I am cleaning it for a friend. I do know that it was bought second hand from the owner's employer, that it was shared between 4 employees in the past, That the latest update (when I received it) was SP1, That there was no firewall or effective anti-virus protection installed! That the owner's 15YO daughter has full access and can surf uncontrolled wherever she wishes. Anything is possible.

Obviously, my next question - is there anything I can install before I return the computer which will help prevent a recurrence of these problems, I intend to leave Spybot, AVG & Adaware

Thanks for the feedback, the HJT log looks clean now, good job:bigthumb:

is there anything I can install before I return the computer which will help prevent a recurrence of these problems

the owner's 15YO daughter has full access and can surf uncontrolled wherever she wishes.
You answered your own question. You might consider Windows Defender (freeware) as a realtimre spyware program:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
but what I suggest you do is run a last scan with AVG to make sure it scans clean and then read the links I am about to post. Once you have done that, if you still have questions, post them.

Some good information for you:

Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.

Thanks Phil

AVG scan has given a clean bill of health! Computer seems far faster now. I've read your links above and decided to install Spywareblaster for their ongoing protection.

Once again - many thanks!:bigthumb:
