Hi all,

I had the virtumonde problem, and possibly others. I have run scans via spybot, norton & McAfee. All say the problem is removed or fixed... but returns on Reboot.

I followed the instructions in the sticky thread. Updated, immunized, started in safe mode, scanned, in advanced mde with TT turned off. Found no problems. (I.E. did NOT show any problems, but HAD returned on several prior scans.) Rebooted noticed several command windows pop-up and disapear. When coming to the forum got browser pop-ups.

Thank you in advance for the help!

Here is the HiJack This log....

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

You have a nasty one here, have a look:
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\svchost.exe
http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/viruses-and-spyware/trojbancbanjc.html

Troj/Bancban-JC steals confidential information relating to certain online banking applications by displaying fake login screens, and sends stolen information to a remote user.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Troj%2FBancban-JC&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

I am not even sure what this one is up to but you can bet it's no good.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\winlogon.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/Windows_Logon_Applicationedc-23696.html

On top of that you also have a Vundo infection, and I believe you should have this information:

A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Luckily this computer does not have any banking software or information of any kind like that on it. No Credit card info, etc. I have read all the links supplied, and thanks for all the info.

Right now... lets try to get rid of the viruses. If we can get them cleaned up, I will then try to back-up everything and possibly re-format at that time.

If not able to get them cleaned, or the viruses give problems during attempted removal, we'll format.

Let's get started. Let me know what to do first.

Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks

I'm running the fix now, and will post details when completed. One of those nasty little viruses was pretty smart. When I would enter safe mode... the screen would suddenly go blank, as it was coming up, removing all the icons, start menu, etc. (As in the descriptions of one of those viruses) It took me 4 tries to beat the blank screen to get into C:\ and start running the file.

It appears to be running now. In the event I couldn't get it in safe mode... could it be run in normal mode or not?

Thanks again :beerbeerb:

That is just the first step, SDFix is designed to remove those bots. We will need other tools once that item is removed. The tool may run in Normal Mode but would not be as effective.

Thanks

Here are the results from the two files. It's obvious there is still stuff on their as it keeps trying to open browser sessions.

Here is the report.txt info from SDfix:

Thanks for returning your information, follow the directions carefully.

1) Delete SDFix from the computer, it has done it's job.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information, proceed carefully and in the numbered order.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\ <<< update your Java program, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(you may leave this if you set it that way)
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: egnnml.dll <<< may be gone

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAB and a new HJT log.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

OK... Here is the completed info for you! I've only opened an outside connection just now to post this. The computer seems OK, speed is OK... but will try a restart to see if anything unusual pops up as had previously.

I may wait to see how quickly you respond before I do that though! Thanks again for the help!

First the CFScript Log:

ComboFix 08-08-29.02 - Owner 2008-08-29 21:06:06.2 - NTFSx86
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\ComboFix.exe
Command switches used :: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\CFScript.txt
* Created a new restore point

WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. MBAM found the junk in the combofix quarantine and infected System Restore files, we will address those shortly. All looks good on this end, if you agree then this is the next bridge we must cross.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Looks good :bigthumb: Here is some information about Recovery Console.

Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run MBAM again to make sure we got it all, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update Symantec and scan your system to be sure it is working right and scanning clean. If you have any issues with the program, contract tech support for instructions.

Thanks Phil...

Everything came back as all clean. When I went back online, Service Pack 3 downloaded... which I am installing the updates now.

Thank you for the links supplied. Do YOU have a favorite anti-virus product? I have used many in the past, McAfee seems to hog too many resources on this laptop. (However works OK on my desktops... so not sure if it different versions or what)

I am going to uninstall most of the items that we installed for the repair... are their any I should keep on the system IYHO?

This is the first time I have gotten a virus in almost 10 years, that took this kind of effort to remove. (I Typically keep my computers pretty locked down!) I used to keep up to speed on most problems & bugs out there, but now that I don't do computer/system work any longer it was over my head now.

Thanks to you and all the volunteers who help on this board (and others). :bigthumb:

There will be a donation coming through.

Thanks for the questions, ATF-Cleaner is about as good as a free cleaner comes and MBAM is your to keep if you wish. I personally run AVG 8 free and I dropped McAfee after many years for the exact same reason you mention. I suggest you take the time to read the links I posted, all of your questions should be answered in them. If not, post the question and I will do my best.
