Google Hijacking, Website Blocking and other problems

Hello, I'm having quite a difficult time with my computer right now. It started two days ago. I got a virus that turned off my firewall, changed my wallpaper and tried to get me to download some bogus software. I found out through my virus scans that it was Smitfraud-C.gp. Now I was taught to turn off system restore when you do virus scans so I did that, I know now that you advise against it but I did not know at the time.

Anyways after the virus scans were done, including doing the scans in safe mode (Note: My computer suffered from a dirty shut down due to a power outage while doing these scans) I restarted my computer. When I logged on I got a message that system restore had an error and my wireless network was down. I restarted the computer again after resetting my router and this is when the real trouble started.

When I restarted my computer it would freeze on or right after the user log in screen. A friend told me that it was probably the display adapter. So I restarted my computer in VGA mode and uninstalled it. After it reinstalled it seemed like my computer was fine.

Then I went on to the internet and saw that when I used google or any other search engine, any links it provided would be redirected to sites like go.google, adservices10, etc.

Also, all help sites like this forum are being blocked, BleepingComputer & Microsoft too. (I'm using another computer to type this.) And the problem with the display adapter keeps happening.

I can't even run a spybot search (the program will open but won't do a search) or download any updates for my antivirus programs. The only program that will still scan my computer is AVG 7.5. My keyboard also keeps cutting in and out, but I don't know if that's related.

I also keep getting the system restore error that screws up my display adapter.

I have presently disconnected my infected computer from the internet.

So to summarize:
-Got Smitfraud virus.
-Turned off system restore. (It's currently still off.)
-Ran virus scans and presumably got rid of it.
-Suffered dirty shut down due to power outage during scans.
-After scans, got error message concerning system restore. (Still getting this message currently.)
-Wireless router network screwed up. It's working now but I can't turn on network lock or SIDD hiding. The encryption is still there.
-Freezing at or right after Windows log in.
-Uninstalling and reinstalling Display adapter temporarily helps with freezing.
-Search engine results are being hijacked.
-Antivirus & help web sites like this one are being blocked.
-Spybot won't scan.
-Keyboard acting up.
-I disconnect my infected computer from the internet.

Sorry for such a long message, but I've never had such major computer problems like this.

First of all re-enable system restore. Infected restore point is better than no restore point at all.

Then do following (you may have to download tools thru other system):

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
 
Hey Blade81, thanks for the help. I followed the steps that you posted up until the part about running Combo Fix. I tried to get it to run but it said it detected a rootkit and needed to reboot, so I let it. After the reboot I encountered the system restore error message. I clicked on Combo Fix again and got the same message about the rootkit and needing to reboot. When it rebooted again, my computer froze right after the windows log in like it had been doing before most likely due to the system restore error/display adapter problem. (I did turn system restore back on again before I started like you instructed.)

So now I'm at a stand still. I don't know if I feel comfortable trying to fix this on my own. I really don't want to permanently damage my personal files. Do you have any ideas? Or should I take my computer in to somewhere to get professionally fixed?

Download OTViewIt to the Desktop.

* Close all windows and double click on OTViewIt.exe
* Place a tick in the Scan all Users box
* In the File Age drop box, select 90 days
* Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
* Upon completion it produces two logs on the Desktop: OTViewIt.txt and Extras.txt. Post contents of both of these.


Download GMER and save it your desktop:
  • Extract it to your desktop and double-click GMER.exe
  • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
  • Don't check
    Show All
    box while scanning in progress!
  • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
  • This copies log to clipboard
  • Post log in your reply.
 
Hi Blade81, unfortunately my computer keeps freezing and I can't implement the scans you suggest.

I've decided that I will have to send my computer to a local professional to be fixed since I can no longer do anything manually.

I appreciate you taking the time to try to help me. Hopefully my computer (or at least the files) can be saved and I can prevent this from happening in the future.

Hey Blade81, thanks for reopening the topic.

Okay, so I got my computer back and it seems to be in good working order. The internet is working fine and I don't get any system restore error messages.

I started off when I got it back by running Spybot and AVG 7.5. They both detected some small viruses and got rid of them. I imagine it was just leftover parts of the ones that has messed up my computer. I also got a few error messages the first time I shutdown my computer, one of them related to Tea Time but I haven't got any of them since. I've restarted and shut down my computer at least five times since then.

Anyway, after the first scans ran and eliminated the viruses I restarted my computer and ran the scans again. Nothing was detected. So I restarted my computer again in safe mode and ran the scans once more. Again, nothing detected.

So far, so good it seems. But I don't want to get to comfortable yet. My computer had some pretty nasty viruses and I want to make sure that it's all gone before I start using my computer fully again.

To reiterate: After getting my computer back, I ran some virus scans and found a few things. Also received some error messages on my first shut down. After this, I have not picked up any other viruses in repeated scans and have received no more error messages. My internet works fine too.

So should I do anything else to make sure all the viruses are gone?

Uninstall old Adobe Reader and get the latest one here.

Alright, those two files have been deleted. I found a file named tdssinit.dll right beside tdssl.dll.virus. It had a similar name so that's why I noticed it. Should I be concerned about it?

I also downloaded the newest version of Adobe Reader. I got a Tea Timer related error message when I restarted the computer after the download. But I haven't seen it since and I've restarted three times since.

The computer and the internet seem to be working just fine. I did a spybot scan too and it did not detect anything.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.


THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis



UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.


Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.



The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • Download Adaware
    Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial

  • Download SpywareBlaster
    Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
    in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.

  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
    Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
    If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. [*]Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) [*]Click run [*]In the dialog box, type services.msc [*]hit enter, then locate dns client [*]Highlight it, then double-click it. [*]On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. [*]Click ok
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one if you don't have a 3rd party firewall installed.


Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Okay, that file is deleted.

Before I do the final steps, I just got this notice from Tea Time. It's about a registry change that I don't recognize. Right before I got the notice, I saw a small loading bar in the middle of my screen. I took a screencap of the Tea Time notice since the file name is so long.

Is this something to be concerned about? I haven't seen this before on my computer, but I though maybe it's related to the new Adobe Reader I installed. I haven't allowed or denied the change yet, the notice is still on my screen. The info bar says it's a legit entry but I don't know where it came from.
 
I installed the Adobe Reader yesterday and saw this message today. So that means it's okay, right?

If so should I do the final steps you posted next?
