Tried real hard to get rid of these first. Also had an issue with wordpad.exe which I disabled in Services, couldn't disable others because I couldn't identify them. Already ran Spybot and let it fix all, Adaware-fix all, AVGfree-fix all, and a few online scans Bit Defender identified (and said it cleaned) 2 Trojan Downloaders, a Trojan Clicker, and 2 Backdoor Bots (I wrote down the names if you need em). Windows Update (v6) says I have all critical updates, and I also use Spyware Blaster. I will not be rebooting at all (if at all humanly possible) and I would really appreciate help in completely resolving all my system's issues!!! Thanks in advance, Jodi

Okay so I had to reboot while waiting. Spybot keeps finding 17 items and cannot fix 5 (2-cmd service, and 3-SurfSidekick). I used the start up function (advanced) in spybot to try and disable ssk.exe from running at start up by unchecking it. UNsuccessful. Adaware cant fix either, and Hijack this actually pops up an error message if I try to clean any of the SSK entries. I will try the ewido instructions to clean from another thread while I wait- FYI- I am trying to stay in the forum at all times to monitor this thread!!! Because I rebooted here is a more recent Hijack This log...Thanks in advance, Jodi

Ok so downloaded Ewido, installed, and updated (as per instructions given to many with the same problems- cmd.exe and SurfSidekick). Rebooted into safe mode and ran it. It did clean up 1 file and then froze when cleaning Surf Sidekick (I let it attempt to clean for 20+ min.). Rebooted again (spybot still cant't fix 5) and ran Hijack this again here's the log:

Hi

Surfsidekick has an option to uninstall in addremove programs, you can use that OR the fix below.
Download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip).
Unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU)
It must be unzipped to the c:\BFU folder (Or the drive windows is installed to, which is normaly C:\)

Rightclick on this link and choose save target as, save sidekickFix.bat to that BFU folder.
====
Removed link, we are still testing
====
Run sidekickFix.bat, Close all browsers and explorer folder's
Choose yes and fallow the prompts, when prompted to restart the PC do so.
After the PC has restarted and you are here at the forum make and post a hijackthis log.

Hi! Thank you for your help!! I had already downloaded BFU from merijn.org but had it in the wrong place, so I deleted it and unzipped to C:\. I put the other file in there and ran it!!! It helped. Surf Sidekick is gone!! Spybot was able to fix the last 2 files for it on reboot. However, Cmd Service is still an issue (Spybot still cant fix 2 entries for it) and there is one more thing on Hijack This I dont think is supposed to be there, the last entry on the log-services.exe doesnt look at all like any legit windows update file and I did have issues with Windows Redirected Hosts (Spybot already found and fixed these). Thanks so much for the help so far!!! Please advise on what to do next!!! Jodi

If Hijackthis is unable to fix
O23 - Service: Microsoft Windows Update Service (Windows Update Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\services.exe (file missing)

You will need to find and disable it via the windows services
"Windows Update Service" Doublecheck if youve found the correct one it will point to >C:\WINNT\services.exe
any luck ?

For the cmdservice issue:
Download and unzip Ren-cmdservice to your desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your desktop and extracted.
http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/ren-cmdservice.zip
Open the ren-cmdservice folder by doubleclicking it and then doubleclick the
ren-cmdservice.bat file to run the program.
A text will open when it is finished, Post it please.
Then restart the PC run SpyBot check for and fix any problems found.

Great

"Also had an issue with wordpad.exe which I disabled in Services"

what was its exact name and what file did it point to ?

Jodigirl
2006-03-31, 18:36
Oh boy, you know I cant remember where it pointed to- they were listed as NT Services in Hijack This, but I also had keyboard1.exe and mouse.exe (many numbers up to 6 I think) which are fixed now too. I checked all files in my C drive to see if I needed to delete anything after the cleanups, and I cant see any of the suspicious files that were there (like a bad file called windows, a self extracting file called SMART which was to install yan.exe and another maybe rar.exe??, a shortcut to DOS called Hot, and there was more!) I manged to fix the other crud before or shortly after coming into the forum. Any more info I can provide I'd be happy to, as I am sincerley grateful for all your help!!! Thanks again Lonny, Jodi

(P.S.- I will check back to see if you've replied again until this thread is closed)

If you'd like we can cleanup those bad services

Attach a startup list from hijackthis
Start Hijackthis click config misc tools >
plcase a check in [X] list also minor sections
and [X] list empty sections, then click gernerate startuplist log.
Attach that log

Once again many thanks!!! Here's the startup list log, however I do see there is still some traces of the bad stuff (wordpad.exe shows up). I really appreciate your help!! Let me know what I should do next please and thank you, Jodi

I think I mistook Notepad.exe and winpad.exe for wordpad.exe the bad one. On first glance I thought I saw it in the Startup List Log, geez I cant tell for sure. I will relax and let you decide :) Jodi

Do you still have the ren-cmdservice on your desktop ?

If so create and run this batch file inside that folder

Copy the contents of the quote box below into a new notepad document (not wordpad).
Click file> save as...> call it check.bat > file types *all files*> and save it to desktop.

(Echo %DATE% %TIME%
swsc delete winpad
swsc delete winpad.exe
swsc delete "Windows Update Service"
swsc delete mswindll
)>logit.txt 2>&1
start notepad logit.txt

Run check.bat and post back with the text that will open

I hope this was what you were looking for (the text that will open). My continued thanks, Lonny! Jodi

Does it automatically delete the bad file, or did it mean the text created by the search?

Its deletes the regsearch results when you close it is all

I was looking for this though.
Word Process: "C:\WINNT\winpad.exe" (disabled)

Do one more regsearch, this time for
Word Process

Ok, well this time it didnt go as well. I got a Windows Script Host Error
Script: C:\Documents and Settings\AwesomeMachine1\Desktop\RegSrch.vbs
Line: 43
Char: 3
Error: Permission Denied
Code: 800A0046
Source: Microsoft VBScript Runtime Error

However the RegSrch did complete:

Either edit check bat or make another

Copy the contents of the quote box below into a new notepad document (not wordpad).
Click file> save as...> call it check2.bat > file types *all files*> and save it to desktop.

(Echo %DATE% %TIME%
swsc delete msproc
)>logit.txt 2>&1
start notepad logit.txt

Run check2.bat and post back with the text that will open

Is winpad.exe present anywhere ?

Jodigirl
2006-04-02, 02:11
When using the Start>Search for winpad.exe I cant get any results and I went through my C:\ drive and couldn't see it. I also checked Services and cant find any thing there that points to it. Am I missing something- some other way to find it?

Prevention:
Put in place a good hosts file
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
How To Download and Extract the HOSTS file:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm
Replace it about once monthly to keep it updated
There are some notes on win 2k, basicly rename hosts to hostsold try the new hosts file, if problems use the old hosts...

To help avoid reinfection see "So how did I get infected in the first place?"
