Hello,

Yesterday I got the Virtumonde Trojan and also something else on my laptop and after reading this forum and following what it was said in the "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance)" I understood that I have to ask for help because Spybot Search & Destroy cannot get rod of this Troja.
So, I posted my HijackThis Logfile hoping that someone can help me:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

I see evidence of two antivirus programs running: Symantec Shared & ESET NOD32 Antivirus and we only want to run one. Uninstall one of those, if you are having issues doing that, make me aware and I will provide links to removeal tools.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

The BHO I am removing (Adobe) is damaged and not working right if at all. Reinstall it when we finish if you use it. I notice the version, if you are using out of date Adobe Reader, hackers are exploiting those versions:
Adobe Reader 9.0
http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/

Follow carefully the numbered order:

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Tell me how the computer is running now.

Thanks

My computer is working fine now. Thank you very much!
Lately the explorer sometimes chrashed and relunched. But now it seems that everything is ok. Is my computer clean now or there are some other things we have to do? I would much apreciate if you could give me some informations or some links that tell me how can I protect my PC for not having this problem again.

Thank you very very much Phil for helping me.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, before we finish I will post information from security experts. After you read that information, if you still have questions, post them.

This is the next bridge we must cross: I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

I wanted to install RC in the beginning, as I was told in the ComboFix Tutorial, but a warning sign told me that "Setup cannot continue because the Version of Windows on your Computer is newer than the version on the CD."
It must be because I've installed SP3 a few months ago for security enhancement.
After clicking OK to that sign, the instalation started but I wasn't sure if that was ok so I stopped it.

So now I ask you what shall I do about it?

Gratitude for all the help,

Dan

You are not using a CD are you? I understand the version for SP2 works for SP3 as long as you use the correct version.
You have Microsoft Windows XP Professional with SP3, so use the version for SP2. This one:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=535D248D-5E10-49B5-B80C-0A0205368124&displaylang=en

Download it to your Desktop and follow the example to drag it to the combofix icon. Remember to choose NO, there is no reason to run combofix again. Post the log as suggested.
If that will not work, we will have to skip the installation.

Thanks

I hope I didn't do anything wrong but, before you ansered me, I installed RC with may Laptop Windows XP SP2 CD as was written in the CF Tutorial after reading more careful the CF tutorial, that stated the posibility to install RC from SP2 to SP3 sistems.

The instalation went without problems, but now I cannot find the C:\*CF-RC.txt*

What I can show you is the boot.ini file, that reveals the RC on this sitem:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Please forgive me if I have done something wrong.

Thank you,

surround

Looks like it was installed right, here is some information about RC:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run MBAM again to be sure we got all of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update ESET NOD32 Antivirus and scan your system to be sure the program is working right and scanning clean.

I'll post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.
