Last week I had the warning pop up with the Virtumonde, I managed to get rid of the horrible blue screen, and I've ran Search and Destroy and an Anti Malware thing, it found lots of things and they were suposedly got rid of, but everytime I do a scan with both of those programmes it all just comes up again. When I turn my laptop on now it comes up with loads of command windows saying error, and most of the time it just shuts itself off and on again and will only run in safe mode. It is usually way slow but its even more frustratingly slow now!!
I am useless with computers and stuff, hence my over use of 'thing'!!
I'd be very grateful of any help, as I am loosing the will to live with this!!! :)

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

Well miss_s, you have a very infected computer here so I will offer you the option to reformat to you:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/
http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/how-tos/reinstall-faq.html
http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/reformat.htm

You have a nasty rootkit: http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-15250.html and rouge program: AntispywareBot and there is more. If you wish to clean this, it will be tough. From you I do not expect a computer geek but I do expect that you read and follow the directions carefully and if you run into something you are not sure of, stop and ask.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

OK, so I hope this is right because its literally taken me hours to do everything!! It took over an hour to do the ComboFix scan, annoying!

Can I do the scans and things in safe mode because obviously things actually work better then, and in Normal mode my laptop only seems to like to work in the evenings....otherwise it just turns off and on.

Also about reformatting, I have searched for the disks I have for everything and I can not find them, which is a mass pain.

So if you can help and bare with me in the slowness, I'd be ever so gratefull! :)

Thanks for returning your information, sorry that the junk is harder to get off than it was to get on. I usually avoid safe mode unless the tool requires it, so few folks are comfortable booting to safe mode.

The good news is this most recent HJT log looks clean of malware, let's do this now.

1) C:\VundoFix Backups <<< delete that folder and the contents

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

(no need to download MBAM again if you still have it, just update and run it according to these instructions)

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

How is the computer running?

Thanks...Phil

It seems to be working a bit better now, it at least stays turned on but is still quite slow. But who knows what will happen! It's always ran quite slow really and takes forever to start up, do you think its because Ive had nasties on it for a long time or is there something I can do to speed it up a bit?

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. You said:

do you think its because Ive had nasties on it for a long time or is there something I can do to speed it up a bit?
Did you read the information about the prefetch folder I posted for you?

Let's finish up with the cleanup and then I will have suggestions to speedup the computer.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean the infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run MBAM again to make sure we got all of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update McAfee and scan your system to make sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have any problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.
http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/

I would like to know how much RAM you have installed on the computer, if you do not know find out like this.
Right click MyComputer then click Properties. Once the System Properties window loads, your RAM count is in the bottom right corner, post that information.

Look at the information in these two links for ways to improve speed and performance.

I will post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.

Some good information for you:

Oh yes I did read it but got ahead of myself and didn't do anything about it, I have now though. I've ran McAfee and MBAM today and it found nothing

I've got 192 RAM on my computer, after reading the stuff you attached, is McAfee maybe not the best anti virus I can have because it slows it down?
Should I keep Spybot S&D and MBAM and maybe getting AVG instead of McAfee, it confused me a little bit about what to have and what not to have at the same time!

Your help has been muchly appreciated :present: I was ready to just throw my laptop out of the window before I found this site!!

Thanks for the feedback, take the time to read the information from those experts I posted, that should answer all of your questions. If it does not, let me know.

Let's talk about RAM now. I really don't do anything fancy like resource intense games or programs on my computer and the one I am typing on right now has 1.25 GB's of RAM. That is over five time what you have. See this information: http://www.crucial.com/support/howmuch.aspx

Adding RAM to increase computer speed - Video Tip

Humm...the video is for a Desktop, here is information for a Laptop.

Hope that helps...Phil

The stupid thing is back. I turned my computer on today and the same things are happening. I ran a MBAM scan and it found a couple of the same things, so I removed them I did two more full scans and the last one came up with nothing, but I can see the weird files when I look at msconfig and the error command windows come up when I turn it on. This is a nightmare!!
I need to search again for the disks to reformat, but shall I do the same process all over?
Last night I turned the Tea Timer thing back on on S&D, should I not have done that?
Ahhh!!

I see no malware in this HJT log. You will need to provide me with some information. Look what you are saying and explain how I am to many any sense out of it.

I ran a MBAM scan and it found a couple of the same things, so I removed them I did two more full scans and the last one came up with nothing, but I can see the weird files when I look at msconfig and the error command windows come up when I turn it on.

Please do not say error unless you are prepared to post that error message word for word.

Ok so, When I ran the mbam scan it found 'lanmanwrk.exe.' and 'advap32.exe.' and it says they have now been deleted. The two things in msconfig that are still there are 'lanmanwrk.exe.' and '~.exe.'

When the computer starts up lots of windows come up and they pop up and close quite fast that I can't properly see what it says, but it literally just says 'error'. All this is what was happening in the very first place.

Run combofix again, let's see what it shows:

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

I've tried several times to run the Kaspersky online scan, but it won't work. It downloaded the latest version of Java and then each time I try to scan it pops up saying 'Starting Java applet has failed! Please go online to use this programme' - even though I am clearly online.

Thanks for letting me know, here is some information that may help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357
http://searchwindowsserver.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid68_gci1041481,00.html
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_reset_your_ip_address

I am going to suggest strongly that you first contact your Internet Service Provider for help with this. This is what tech support gets paid to do. The reason...some ISP's use what is called "static" IP numbers and only they would know.

Hope this helps.
