Hello,

I have read the entire prerequisite procedure. And I have attempted to follow them. However, there is a problem. I cannot remove all the threats detected by Spybot. The file name is the following: C:\\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk

If I try to remove this threat my computer reads it as a threat and shuts down immediately.

If also have not downloaded a Service Package for the reason that I do not know if I have one. Could I find out how to know whether or not I have one? If so how? Also, if I have posted in the wrong place or left anything else out please let me know. I will include a hijackthis log entry as well:

Hi Jeremiah

We will begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Thank you for your prompt response. I'm over my head in school right now, so it took me a while to get around to this.

Notes:
I use Firefox (latest edition), not Internet explorer though firefox was just now somehow switched out of being my default browser. I know this because it asked me if I wanted to switch (I said yes).

I have (or had) vundo trojans on my computer. I am still getting internet explorer pop-ups whenever I start up and close firefox.

I installed combofix and a recovery mode and turned off the computer. When I turned it back on it said reference memory 0xdc5da613 could not be written. I debugged. I have had this happen to me several times before.

After combofix rebooted my PC, as it was creating a logfile I received the alert that windows had terminated the program "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" and clicking OK and don't send made the logfile take forever to be created.

I noticed that combofix also could not delete the ...core.cache file

Here are my logs. I will put the HJT log first because I know combofix logs are really long.

I guess my logs were short enough. I hope that was clear. I psated both logs and then the COmbofix log and 9/10 of the HJT log disappeared so I repasted it.

Jeremiah
2008-09-05, 02:21
If I'm not mistaken, I think what happened was I pasted the combofix log onto the HJT log while it was still in notepad so I probably double posted the combofix log. sorry.

Yes, no problem :)

There is a protecting driver for core.cache.dsk; we will delete it a bit later.

Have you uses any USB sticks lately?

I ask because there are signs of flash infection and in that case those sticks need to be formatted first.

Jeremiah
2008-09-05, 23:19
Not recently, but in the past 9 months. 1 in particular probably had viruses, though I used Norton Security scan on it...once. I would not be surprised at all at a flash infection.

Jeremiah
2008-09-05, 23:20
Oh, and no, I do ot plan on using any USB flash sticks. Double-post. Sorry.

Excuse me, where is the edit button? Does this forum not allow editing? I forgot to mention that on this last boot up, referenced memory 0x01010585 referenced memory at 0x00000000 could not be "written" and then Fax Service encountered an error. If those things are unrelated, tell me and I'll stop listing them.

Edit button should be down right.

But there can be a time frame when you can edit your posts.

Thank you for info.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\usbhubb.sys

Driver::
usbhubb

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{609fe6c3-1c69-11dd-9633-0015c5676bfb}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{74ef47e6-8258-11dc-a2b1-0015c5676bfb}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{edf7d3aa-28da-11dd-9651-0015c5676bfb}]

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Jeremiah

My only options in the bottom right, even immediately after posting, are quote and multi-quote.

Is the 20-minute time retrictment from start to the appearance of the logfile. It took 22-23 minutes to appear. I found one process called "Vfind" on taskmanager but did not end it because it's not "find" or "findstr". And no "sed" or "sweg".

No errors upon reboot. Memory nor program. Here are the logs:

Sorry. And Firefox was switched from my default browser again...

Yes, combofix can do it.

Please download JavaRa (http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=javara&filename=JavaRa.zip&use_mirror=osdn) and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I was supposed to install JRE 6 update 7 not just download it right?

I am having trouble connecting with kaspersky.com. The server is taking too long to respond. I guess it's pretty popular...

Yes as said here :)

"Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7."

If no, you can try this instead:

Please go to Eset website (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/) to perform an online scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

Check (tick) this box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click on the Start button next to it.
When prompted to run ActiveX. click Yes.

Thanks, I used eset scanner. 13 threats. By the way, a Geek Squad emplyee told me my PC needs to be "optimized" because it constantly runs at 100% and so it takes forever to do anything. Is there a way to do that myself? The virus scan took 4:53.

Which programs use most of the CPU?

Jeremiah
2008-09-08, 09:44
Sorry. Not constantly. But anytime a new program begins running. WMP for example. It spikes to 90-100%....and I just tested that. It used to stay elevated and the sound would be choppy but not anymore. I think this clean-up (spy-bot) is partly to thank for that. But sometimes with no programs running, every now and then it goes up to 20-30 percent for a second and the processes switch their orders around but then reorganize and I can't find what it was that was at 35% because it's already gone.

And during start up my computer is slow to the point that the classic windows XP chime is mutilated. But if I just wait it settles down to 0-5%.

Shaba
2008-09-08, 12:37
How much RAM you have?

Jeremiah
2008-09-09, 06:40
.99 GB RAM

Dell Windows XP/ Vista capable. 1.70 GHz. Home Edition. Service Pack 2 (found it!)

Shaba
2008-09-09, 15:55
Do you have automatic updates on?

Jeremiah
2008-09-11, 01:55
Yes, however my computer is seldom on at 3:00 A.M. That's update time.

Notes:
I turned on my computer and 0x76b22b6d memory at 0x87fd5000 could not be read. I debugged, however my wireless wasn't working. So I rebooted. no errors with wireless afterward or anything else.

And in both boots Quickset.exe did not initialize. It's a nice little thing that displays bars such as volume or brightness when you are changing them using Fn combinations. Have the programs I've been running shut that off because it's a startup program? It's helpful because I can't tell if I have enabled or disabled my wireless device from Network Connections or any individual wireless configuring program. Fn+F2 actually disabled whatever it is that transmits (transmitter?) and isn't shown from any wireless device so to know I just experiment. But with Quickset it displays a radio tower with an X over it or transmitting a signal so that really helps me out. I did however, initialize quickset.exe myself and all's well. It's a Dell program.

Shaba
2008-09-11, 11:35
Then I suggest that you disable them and let me know if it helped for startup slowness.

Jeremiah

I wasn't thinking and ran Mozilla as soon as the screen came up (around 3.5 min.) and then task manager. My computer was at 2-5% in 6.5 minutes with Mozilla running. How good/bad is that?

Shaba
2008-09-12, 11:21
That sound pretty normal to me as task manager will also use some CPU.

Jeremiah

Should I reactive the real-time scan on Trend Micro PC-cillin? That's my only real virus protection. I have Norton Security Scan (free version), Adaware SE Personal (free version), and ATF cleaner, though that's not for removing threats. I just ran Spybot and it found cookies, but no driver.core.cache etc. file. So has my computer been fixed? I haven't had any internet explorer pop-ups.

Are we done? Should I delete the Recovery console? Should I keep all the programs you had been download in case of future infection?

I once tried to play Halo for PC on this computer. When my computer was young and innocent it went pretty well. But when it became corrupted it started lagging. Whenever I hit a checkpoint I would wait a few minutes. But this computer isn't supposed to be able to handle Halo...hehe

Shaba
2008-09-13, 12:07
"Should I reactive the real-time scan on Trend Micro PC-cillin? "

No.

"So has my computer been fixed?"

Yes we can assume so :)

"Are we done? Should I delete the Recovery console? Should I keep all the programs you had been download in case of future infection?"

You can delete it but there is no 100% need for that.

All programs will get deleted during final cleanup :)

Still some issues left?

Jeremiah
2008-09-13, 19:17
None of name. My computer took 6:00 minutes to boot and go down to 2%. The process aside from system idel process that had a large CPU digit was wmiprvse.exe under SYSTEM.

So, if I don't have real-time scan going....and tea timer is off...what is protecting me?

Shaba
2008-09-13, 19:20
Sorry, I answered wrong :red:

You should re-activate Trend. I read it wrong and thought you asked for scanning with Trend.

Jeremiah
2008-09-13, 23:00
I just used a flash drive. I scanned it with Trend and it didn't find any viruses. Is that enough or is there some other way to test for viruses on a flash drive. Sometimes I've seen real-time scanning disable the autorun on a flash drive. Is there any other measure to take in not getting viruses from flash drives. I have a separate laptop from my school now and they have disabled all e-mail websites and I can't install hardware such as printers without an admin password, so I have to use a flashdrive. Which stinks.

So, is a regular virus scan enough?

Shaba
2008-09-14, 12:12
Disabling flash drive autorun is usually enough.

Do you need instructions for that?

Jeremiah
2008-09-15, 04:55
Yes, please. I should probably recognize it because I've dealt with CD's whose Autorun was blocked by one security system or another.

Shaba
2008-09-15, 14:46
This (http://windowssecrets.com/2007/11/08/02-One-quick-trick-prevents-AutoRun-attacks) should help :)

Jeremiah
2008-09-16, 01:44
 problem. A) tried to merge the .reg file. It said I could not merge it form outside registry editor...I don't know what that is.

Also, I installed a wireless HP printer yesterday and it put a bunch of HP junk on my computer. I think it encountered an error at 99% but it continued like there was no problem. Today I booted up and one of the HP programs encountered an error. I ignored it and stuck in a the flash drive (which I had already scanned for viruses yesterday) after the desktop loaded.... The computer was running at 100% for 15 minutes so I rebooted without the flash drive. Same error. Still running 100% forever. Then I disabled Windows Update which I had re-enabled. And rebooted. Same error after 16 minutes but after I clicked don't send instead of debug this time, the PC usage immediately declined 48%....something whack...I'm going to reboot this time and take note of which program it is. I'd rather just delete it than reinstall it. The whole onstallation process took an hour almost. It involves wireless, USB, and a disc. HP really knows how to make stuff simple.

Would you say it is this program that is causing my problems?

Jeremiah
2008-09-16, 03:02
The Program is "HP Digital Imaging Monitor". Would you suggest re-installation?

Jeremiah
2008-09-16, 03:22
A final note, so you know what kind of a person you're dealing with. Taking it upon myself to fix the problem. I searched for HP DIgital Imaging Monitor under all files. Found a start-up link and an unrecognized file under WINDOWS/pss. Finding all files in WINDOWS/pss as unreadable, I deleted! the file. Hoping this fixed the problem, I rebooted. And what should happen but Windows Explorer encounters and error and needs to close. After that desktop did not load. So I rebooted and attempted to boot under recovery console...silly me. Realized that didn't do anything I could understand. So I rebooted in normal mode and luckily desktop loaded, so I promptly recovered WINDOWS/pss from the recycle bin. I removed the program HP update prior to deleting WINDOWS/pss and have left that off the computer, but that shouldn't affect anything should it?

Yes, I deleted a WINDOWS file...how bad is it to do that?

Shaba
2008-09-16, 16:24
Then you can open regedit (start - run) and choose File - import and import that file.

Did you delete windows\pss folder?

If you have problems with HP products, I recommend that you contact HP for those issues :)

Jeremiah
2008-09-17, 04:43
Okay, I did so and it asked me if I wanted to replace a pre-existing file...and I clicked yes. And it is took a moment or two to save.

Yes, I deleted the whole folder, and then I restored it.

Okay, the last 3/4 times I booted up my computer encountered an error of some sort with the same referenced memory. I clicked debug the first two times and then "don't send"ed after. Every time windows explorer encountered an error and needed to close, thus effectively disabling my wireless managing capabilities so I could not use the internet. But the 4/5th time's a charm and no problems...except I am still getting the HP error every time around. I will try uninstalling and reinstalling over the weekend.

So, with this new registry file, how does that affect my interaction with CD's and flash drives? If I'm trying to run a CD (i.e. HP software CD), do I need to open the CD and find setup.exe every time? Flash drives are just...drives, so that won't change, right? I just open the drive it's in and view files like I normally would, correct?

thanks

Jeremiah

I hesitate to turn off the computer for fear I will encounter more referenced memory problems. Is there a way to fix these...registry cleaners?

Is it okay for me to delete the noautorun.reg file now that I have merged it with the registry? Tt is still sitting on my desktop.

Yes it is like you said.

"I hesitate to turn off the computer for fear I will encounter more referenced memory problems. Is there a way to fix these...registry cleaners?"

That indicates either hardware or software problems.

"Is it okay for me to delete the noautorun.reg file now that I have merged it with the registry? Tt is still sitting on my desktop."

Yes.

Jeremiah

That indicates either hardware or software problems.

So...if if I have a hardware malfunction, would that be caused by a registry error? Which I created by deleting something or incorrectly deleting something? Or does it just happen after a while? Are there programs to fix these kinds of problems?

I will note that with Automatic Update disabled, before I hibernated, my computer was ranging from 40-100% usage, up to 70% of it being under HelpSvc.exe and after I came out of hibernation Services.exe would take up to 15% occasionally. Like right now...

Since it would seem my problems are fixed (by the way I ran Spybot before Hibernation and it found no immediate threats), should I give a HJT log to make sure all is clear and we are done?

Should I re-enable tea timer?

thanks

Shaba

"So...if if I have a hardware malfunction, would that be caused by a registry error? Which I created by deleting something or incorrectly deleting something? Or does it just happen after a while? Are there programs to fix these kinds of problems?"

No, those would be two separate things then.

"Since it would seem my problems are fixed (by the way I ran Spybot before Hibernation and it found no immediate threats), should I give a HJT log to make sure all is clear and we are done?

Should I re-enable tea timer?"

Yes to both :)

Jeremiah

Alright, booted up, didn't see an HP software error. That was nice. Re-enabled Tea Timer. While I was looking at the start up list on S S&D I think it was Tea Timer that asked me about a bunch of registry changes and I allowed them all. After that was over Tea Timer took up to 99% for a few minutes and then went to 0.

Some final questions:

My mouse device, Synaptics, previously was on start-up and would configure my mouse settings (i.e. touch click) automatically. Now I have to run it ever time I boot or it doesn't apply. How can I put it back on star-up? Should I put the launching .exe in the startup folder? I didn't think it would hurt so I went ahead and copied it into all user startup folder.

And, is services.exe helpful? Because randomly using 20% isn't very nice, particularly during movies. Not that I watch movies on this computer though I have, but I was just giving an example.

Can I delete a notepad file getflashID.txt in local disk (C:) with this being all that is in the text?:
"¿Ø [ "

don't even know what /\ that is. I deleted some other .txt files that had absolutely no text. i.e. AILlog1 and debug1, which I think were files I must have cut out and pasted on here. there still in my bin though...

What happens to HJT logs if I don't save them? Are they sitting somewhere taking up 1-10 WHOLE KB!?

thanks, and here's the HJT log:

Yes that is fine.

"And, is services.exe helpful? Because randomly using 20% isn't very nice, particularly during movies. Not that I watch movies on this computer though I have, but I was just giving an example."

It is essential windows file, see here (http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/services/)

"Can I delete a notepad file getflashID.txt in local disk (C with this being all that is in the text?:
"¿Ø [ "

Yes.

You can delete them. If you don't save them, they won't take any space either.

TeaTimer has brought back some leftovers:

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

Fix these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6DB05E8C-5604-472A-90F1-D040C2EA232F} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7dbc786c-01a4-4bf6-afc6-49f8a35a1345} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: nnnnNDtR - C:\WINDOWS\

Reboot.

Re-enable TeaTimer and post back a fresh HijackThis log, please.

ummmm...I don not understand what to download...am I supposed to copy all the text at http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat into a notepad file and save it as ResetTeaTimer.bat ? There are no links to downloading at http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat....

Jeremiah

And also, when I used the Fn shortcut for Hibernation. Quickset.exe notified me that a driver or application had prevented hibernation and asked me if I want to force hibernation. If I shift-select stand-by (hibernate) then nothing happens...I am going to force hibernation and hope for the best.

HP Digital Imaging Monitor encountered an error again...But this time when I selected it from the start men it didn't...so I guess there's some conflict between it and my computer's start-up process...

You are supposed to right-click that link (http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat) and choose save as/save target as (depends on browser) and save it to your desktop.

For misc windows related problems I can re-direct you to some windows forum :)

Okay...what does it mean to "fix" those 3 files you listed?

Never mind that. hehe. silly me.

Should I keep that resetteatimer file on my desktop or delete it?

No pop-ups. Task Manager works. Never seen it use more than 7 CPU before but now it does (it doesn't go higher than 6 normally, but one time I started it and it took...at least 68% [but I think it might have taken 80 or 90% even]...it was really weird. I cannot recreate the scenario though). My only gripes are my CPU running pretty slow, but I do believe that has little to do with malware in this case. No malware problems that I can name. thank you.

Great :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

For remaining problems, see here (http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?)

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://www.bfccomputers.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1644)

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://www.bfccomputers.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1645)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer. See also a hosts file tutorial here (http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22187)
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
