Hello, good people.
I recently contracted what's come to be called 'antivirus XP 2008'. I had the desktop changed and the single button popup for 'installation' that's described in the general security forum.
When that first occured, I immediately unplugged my network cable and (possibly not the best idea) restarted my computer. I unfortunately had quite a hard time getting into safe mode (for a number of reasons - including no F8 option on startup or from the BIOS).
Here are some other symptoms in case they're useful for someone's research/info:
- On restarting, the computer would shutdown and restart itself after (I assume) the startup list was loaded. This gave me about 3-5 seconds to do anything before it shutdown. I'm no expert, but from what I understand this could be an error in the windows startup system that I had caused and not the virus.
- I finally got into safemode by using bootcfg.exe from the recovery console of the installation disk and proceeded to scan using spybot, malwarebytes, and kapersky.
- spybot found smitfraud (a variant, I believe - CSmitfraud(?))
- Malwarebytes (quick scan) found xp anitvirus.
- Malwarebytes (full scan) found virantix (not mentioned on these forums?)
- Kapersky found avenger and aac.exe
- Firefox and IE were redirecting the safer-networking fora (and other security sites), so I changed back my IE settings and reinstalled firefox.
I've attempted to eliminate all the virii these tools have found and have since gone through multiple reboots to see if a rootkit had reconstructed any virii, but so far, none of these scanners are finding any evidence of them.
The short form: I've attempted to do my best to remove the virii the tools found. I am no expert, tho, and was interested in having someone from these forums have a look at the most recent HJT log to see if I've missed something.
I hope this isn't bad forum ettiquette. I'm interested in learning how to handle these infections more on my own, but lack the experience in analyzing an HJT log, so let me know if this final analysis isn't something these forums were set up for. I was infected at one point.
