Hello all,

I am hoping someone can help my like they have so many others. Did a random scan of Spybot and found Virtumonde. I have Norton and let the updates slip for a couple of days I think...(argh!). I have run Spybot several times (once in safe mode) and each time I take it away, it comes back. Each time I log onto the internet, I eventually get a message from my Norton utility that they have prevented an intrusion attempt from some attack from an outside computer followed by an outside address. Afterwards, I am sometimes asked to give permission to run a weirdly named program (one name was harnzuhu.exe., the other was mrqtszuj.exe). INevitably, after this happens and I run Spybot, Virtumonde has returned.

I could really use some help guys.:)

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy. This is made more difficult by the fact that many malware tools will not run on Vista, all I can promise is to do my best.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

** I should mention that as great a freeware program Spybot S&D is, it cannot remove the junk completely. I know of no program that can.

Hi pskelley,

Thanks so much for giving me a hand. I'm not sure you get many Canadians needing help, but here's hoping you can help one.

I followed your instructions (perfectly). Below is the combofix log followed by the new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information, the infected computers are all over the world, malware knows no boundaries.

Read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order. Before we start:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe <<< because the "Before you Post" instruction were not followed, this is an unsafe location. Follow my instructions to locate it safely.

1) C:\PROGRA~1\Java\JRE16~3.0_0\ <<< out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Folder::
C:\ProgramData\lwfkvuro

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(you may leave that HP redirect if you use it)
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop

O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [EzofFxiZ0Z] C:\ProgramData\lwfkvuro\tktovspa.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run DISK CLEANUP: ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > DISK CLEANUP

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log. <<< use the instruction in #6 to safely locate and post that HJT log.

6) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Thanks

Hi Pskelly,

I followed your instructions as best I could, however I encountered some issues I'll outline before posting the 3 logs you requested.

1) I did read the "Before you post" instructions regarding where to save "hijackthis.exe". I use firefox and unfortunately the downloading defaults were to save the file to my "downloads" folder. Once there, I tried to then move it to the desktop as per the original instructions. After I successfully did this, at no time did it default download to a Program Files\Trendmicro folder. I believe this has since been addressed with your new set of instructions (#6) and I have changed my default settings to download directly to the desktop.

2) In instruction #3, you ask me to check a box in front of this item:

O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [EzofFxiZ0Z] C:\ProgramData\lwfkvuro\tktovspa.exe

but I could not find it anywhere. I did find the first one though and ran the scan anyway.

3) Despite my best efforts, I could not download any updates to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as per your instructions. It would not connect with any of the 3 servers. The one I downloaded was last updated Sept 1st. I hope this is okay, I ran it anyway.

4) I followed your instructions and now I have hijackthis in it's proper location. What should I do with the old one that is on the desktop?

Thanks again, here are the 3 logs:
CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, I will only respond where a response is necessary.

First: C:\program files\limewire\limewire.exe <<< see this information
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.

2) CFScript removed the item before you got to is, I usually state that but missed an item. Comes from the many folks I am trying to help at the same time

3) I had a similiar complaint from another member about the same time. However I managed to update my copy with no issues, so the site may have been down for maintenance or whatever. I suggest you try again and run MBAM updated when you can for your benefit.

4) Delete the old copy, it looks to be located properly and that being the case, you have a shortcut to the program and the .exe, and all loges, backups are safely stored in a folder off the Desktop where they can not get deleted by accident.

It appears you removed Viewpoint but I see it running still from Services?
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
If Vista works like XP you can disable that service like this:
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Viewpoint Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

The rest of the HJT log appears to be clean of malware.

How is the computer running now, any malware issues?

Thanks...Phil

Sorry this took so long, but I had to travel on the weekend.

Ok, everything seems to be running better. But I ran a randon virus scan with my Norton utility and 15 viruses came up! They were the following:

Downloader.MisleadApp(3 of them)
Antivirus2008(8 of them)
Trojan.Dropper (4 of them)

They could not be removed by Norton.

I then went to the Malaware program, downloaded the latest update and did a full scan.

It found 5 problems. The log is below:

Before we remove combofix, update and run both Norton and MBAM again, let me know about any items they find they can not deal with. I need to know the names and location of the files if any are found.

Post that information and a new HJT log for a fresh look.

Thanks

Updated and ran both the Norton utility and Malware programs and no viruses came up at all. Very weird.

Here is the latest HJT logfile.

TeaTimer is enabled in this HJT log when the instructions we started with said to leave it disabled until we finished?

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes.
* Restart your computer.

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktophttp://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - Cmdmapping - (no file) (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_01) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_05) -

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

I apologize for resetting the tea timer. Not sure why I got ahead of myself.

It has since been turned off again.

I tried the link you gave to download resetteatimer.bat and instead it took me to some website with lots of script....nothing to download.

Have I done something wrong?

Make sure you run all tools as administrator, for ResetTeaTimer.bat which is a simple batch file to clear TT's memory, make sure you are using Internet Explorer.

Point your mouse at the link and right click then click "Save Target as" choose DESKTOP then follow the simple directions. You will not see anything happen.

Thanks

Thanks pskelley,

...for helping an idiot like me. I followed all your instructions, combo fix is gone and the teatimer is reset without problems.

Thanks so much for doing what you do.

Before you help another, I need to ask since you probably have the superior knowledge. I've heard terrible things about Norton, but I've used it faithfully for years. Is it really the best, or are problems associated with it too much? Is there a better/more reliable product? I have Norton, plus Spybot, plus adaware, and now I know about Malware. Is this overkill?

Understand that you're busy, I'll leave you alone after this :)

Thanks so much,

Aaron

Good morning Aaron, I will say I only suggest freeware programs and as a professional, you are not going to get me to talk about other programs. I suggest you ask a good search engine like Google those questions.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=rank+antivirus+programs&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=
Keep in mind just because a site if first, does not mean it is best, just getting more hits. Look at several and base your decision on balanced information.

Understand that you're busy, I'll leave you alone after this
If I am busy it is because I choose to be and folks like you seek out this fine forum for help with malware. If you would review the links I posted I believe all of your questions will be answered. If this is not the case, then post and I will do my best.

Safe surfing...Phil
