Whenever I boot up Windows, i get an error that reads
C:\WINDOWS\system32:nskrnl32.exe is not accessible. The directory name is invalid.

I did a quick google search and the only link I found said it's malware. I tried going into msconfig to remove it from startup, but I couldn't find a filepath that includes the above. I ran the computer in safe mode, running both Adaware and Spybot, but got nothing. The only program that shows there might be a problem is Security Task Manager, but that can only shut it down, not remove it. At this point, I'm at a loss for what to do.
Here's my log. Thanks for your help

hi justalex,

first we will use hjt. then get a download. before using hjt please disable spybots tea timer if running and windows defender real time component if running. so they allow the hjt changes--how:

tea timer:
1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

defender:
1. Launch Windows Defender
2. Click Tools > General Settings
3. Under Realtime Protection Options uncheck "Turn on real real-time protection (recommended)".
4. Click the Save button
5. Close Windows Defender

next:

start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Update32] C:\WINDOWS\system32:nskrnl32.exe

last:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
* Choose your usual account.

* Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
* Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
* It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
* Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

post the sdfix log and a new hjt log please

hi,

thanks for the info. looks like sdfix took care of the ADS. we will get one more download to get a better look. link and directions below:

Download combofix from one of these links and save it to your Desktop:

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" in your reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

hi justalex,

that all looks good. you can remove combofix like this:
start>run and type in the window--> combofix /u
click ok
note: the space after the x and before the /

you can delete the sdfix folder from its default install location @ C:/

if all is good on your end, two things to do; update java and system restore;

java:

Vulnerabilities/exploits in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

system restore:

One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

for your reference:

My Top Ten List
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, (Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons. Do you trust the source?
3) Install, keep updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications.
4) Refrain from clicking on links or installing files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message.
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites to install software to your computer.
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts rather than administrator accounts.
8) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
10) If your habits include visiting or downloading/installing files from: warez, crack sites or p2p (file sharing) networks: then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?
