Hi,

Windows 98
Intel Pent 2
Internet v6
AVG Virus Scanner

This morning I found that most of my emails had vanished from my email from their folders. I'm running incredimail and never had problems with this before.
I noticed yesterday that in the history of my internet, there were a lot of internet pages that when you clicked on them they failed to open but showed error message:-

Can not find the file 'file:///C:Documents%20and%20Settings/Administration/My%20Documents/IM/Runtime?Message/%7BFA2F7C2C-0E75-4003-B5FB-132D224FD042%Show/html/htmlStr_Prev.html(or one of it's components). Make sure the path & file name are correct & that all required libraries are available.

Some of these are emails that I had deleted a while ago.

I have run AVG & Spybot, which show nothing, kapersky which showed a couple of things, I can send reports. But I'm not sure what has happened or what I can do about it.

Some of the emails that I really need to try & recover are required as evidence in court!!

Will a recover help?

Regards

Hi ya,

I've ran and attached HJT, Panda Scan & Kaspersy Logs. Spybot scan came back clean.

With regards to the HJT log, I know that the 01 - winmx can be deleted, but I've left everything as it is.

Regards

Hi Miss Spooky,

Thanks for your patience - we've been a little swamped lately.

Could you locate the following file and get it scanned please at one of the listed online file scanners below:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Received Files\msn.exe

First, make sure you have enabled your PC to show hidden files. Follow the directions here:
Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files
How to Show Hidden Files
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Then go here:

Virus Total
http://www.virustotal.com/

or here:

Jotti Malware Scan
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

And use the browse button to navigate to the file:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Received Files\msn.exe to submit for scanning. Wait while the scan finishes and it will present a report. Please copy and paste the results of that scan back here.

Also please post a fresh HijackThis log since it has been a few days.

Hello,

Thank you for the reply. I can see how busy you guys get.

This is really strange, I had a look for My Received Files and it seems to have disappeared... I ran a search for msn.exe but didn't find the folder. So was unable to scan file.

But I notice in the new HJT log, that the folder is still there. I went through to check folders are not hidden as per link and all is correct.

Here is my updated log.

Kindest regards

Miss Spooky

That is definitely a bogus registry startup entry and the real msn.exe would not reside in that folder. So let's do some more diagnostics.

Please download this free tool called Rootkit Revealer
http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/rootkitrevealer.html

(link is at the very bottom of the page)
Unzip it to your desktop.
Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
Click the Scan button (bottom right)
It may take a while to scan (don't do anything else while it's running)
When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here

Hi Miss spooky,

I missed this reply! The results on your rootkit revealer log are mostly FPs from surfing while it was running the scan...that's why the instructions say
(don't do anything else while it's running)

Can you try that Rootkit Revealer scan again please and don't use the computer for anything else until it finishes? Then post the new log.

................
Might as well run this tool also please:
Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure blacklight:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Do NOT choose rename for any items yet!
I need to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there...
A log will be created on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx are numbers)
Please post the contents of the log in your next reply, along with an updated HijackThis log.

Morning,

Ran both of the above links. They both came back clean so nothing to paste.

Here's my latest HJT log. I've deleted all the 01 winmx logs.

Regards

Ok, good :) That pretty much rules out any stealth malware anyway.

The only thing left in your log is that startup entry in the "My Received" folder which apparently is no longer there. So we'll fix the startup entry with HijackThis and also the orphaned McAfee Toolbar entry.

Open HijackThis and do a scan only. When it finishes, checkmark these two in the list and press *fix checked*

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN] C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Received Files\msn.exe

I can't find any malware reason for your missing emails. It must be due to something else or a mis-step of some sort.

Hi ya,

Ran HJT and fixed those two files. I've posted a new HJT log.
I'm glad that there is no stelph malware. When I ran the Kaspersky & Panda scans they both threw up various virus & spyware, are they still present?

Some of the emails have come back, so I'm wondering if it may have been an Incredimail blip. Maybe we'll never no.

I'm thinking yes, probably something in your email client is responsible for the lost emails? Couldn't find any active malware after all those scans and looking. Did you check your recycle bin? If not, do that now because the next step following will delete the contents of the recycle bin. Also, is it possible you archived the data with this program?
Freecom Personal Media Suite

There is nothing active on the KAV or Panda reports. You just need to clear your cache, empty the TEMP folder and do some basic cleanup. You can easily do this using the Windows disk cleanup utility.

Go to Start > Run
Type in the box: cleanmgr
Wait while windows scans your system for files to delete. When finished it will present a list. Make sure these 3 are checkmarked and press *ok* to delete them:

Temporary Files

Temporary Internet Files

Recycle bin

Panda has found some cookies (not really harmful) that you can delete manually and some trace things in the registry.

If you installed Web Rebates on purpose and use and enjoy the program, then leave it. If not, Web Rebates is best removed via Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel (if present)

Hi ya,

Thank you for your help,

Done a clean up, everything seems to be ok now, but I'm just a bit concerned about not being able to locate the "My Received Files" folder and the msn.exe rouge file.

With regards to the Freecom, I'm not sure that we did archive files, this was only installed as part of a free digi camera my sister aquired with a well known mag. We've never used it and it didn't seem to be giving us any probs?

Have a good break.

but I'm just a bit concerned about not being able to locate the "My Received Files" folder and the msn.exe rouge file.

All we were seeing was a reference to it in the registry:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN] C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Received Files\msn.exe

And we used HJT to fix that registry entry, once it was verified the file and folder were not present on your PC. It was most likely removed in a prior cleaning step
