My wife managed to download a bunch of trojans etc onto my machine. AVG came up with 14 infections which have been removed but the browser is still being hijacked with ads, pages and various rubbish. Having had a similar thing some time ago when my son managed to pop a rootkit on the machine I wated to make sure that there is nothing too grim going on

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

It's grim enough, looks like multiple infections. Let's see what combofix willl do to them.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

4) This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

Tell me how the computer is running now.
As far as I can see, I did not get any feedback from you about performance?

Everything looks as it should from here, if you agree, let's move on like this.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run a new MBAM scan to make sure we got all of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.

Update AVG 8 and scan the sytem to make sure it is running right and scanning clean. Let me know all is well before I close you.

Sorry about that - performance seems fine. As you said it is perhaps a little slower booting up

If I go online there are no longer ads popping up and nothing else seems odd

I won't be back on the machine for about 7 hours when I get home and will do those things there

My son has a networked machine off my one and shares the internet connection but has not exhibited any problems - would I be sensible to do a Hijackthis log off his once mine is clean in case we go round in a vicious circle?

Thanks again and I'll post the logs when I get home from playing music about midnight - 1 GMT if the MBAM scan and AVG scan take a long time to do again.

Thanks for the additional advice - I have very few problems with viruses etc over the last 10+ years but I share a machine with my family... :)

One slightly strange thing still

My wife has a User Account on the machine and when I went on it it had an Active Desktop error on it. There is also next to the clock in the system tray in white writing on a blue background it says VIRUS ALERT. I turned off Active Desktop anyway

There is also no facility to Log Off and most of the options had disappeared from the Start menu. I reinstated Run and logged off by typing in logoff (good guess!)

Anything to be concerned about?

Nick, when you were running tools like combofix and MBAM, etc. this should have been done while signed in to the administrative account. That being the case, I believe it wouild have cleaned all of the malware. We may have to run one or more of the tools again, let's take a look at these individual user accounts.

Make sure you have the computer set so you can view all files and folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\Nick\Desktop\arw\HijackThis.exe <<< the first log I saw had a folder called "arw" so the files, notepads and backups would be safely stored. Even though I do not like it running from the desktop, I did not ask you to move it because of that folder. The other users have no such folder. I strongly suggest you follow these directions to safely postition HJT:
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log. <<< close the program the log will be stored.

Nick, when you were running tools like combofix and MBAM, etc. this should have been done while signed in to the administrative account. That being the case, I believe it wouild have cleaned all of the malware. We may have to run one or more of the tools again, let's take a look at these individual user accounts.

It's an XP Home machine and I didn't think of that and just used my account D'oh

From the account with the VIRUS ALERT

1) Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab
Select "Privacy Protection" you find in there and press the delete button on the right. Hit ok below > apply in previous window.

Sign in as administrator and delete the copy of combofix since it is updated daily at the least, then download a fresh copy from here:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Make sure you save it to the Desktop, then run it and post the log.

Update MBAM, scan the system , remove what it finds and post the log.

Report on issues...
