Webwatcher Detection and Removal

Operating System: Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 3

Spybot successfully detects Webwatcher from Awareness Technologies but fails to remove it. The files reside in the windows/system32/config directory. Which means they can not be deleted.

The problem is there are associated files from webwatcher in memory and Spybot asks you if you would like to scan the system at the next startup. But when you do that it still runs into the same problem.

None of the processes are visible in task manager or any process explorer I have used.

Spybots message about Webwatcher in the right window of the seach and destroy operation echos the claim of Awareness technologies and says: "Webwatcher claims that there is no securty tool that can stop its doing"

LOL, This sounds like a strong challenge to Safer networking and Spybot!!


I would love some help in resolving this short of a reinstallation of my OS!!


This software was installed in my computer by an unauthorized user!

Webwatcher appears to be a legitimate program that someone installed on your computer, when you say an unauthorized user installed it, who are you referring to, someone in your house ??

Been reading about this and the program appears invisible, I don't believe any of the scans we use will pick this up. Why don't you try contacting them with the links I posted above and ask them how to uninstall it, if no luck post back and we can dig further.

The person that did this is a former employee that did not have permission to install this. Yes Webwatcher is a legitiamate program but they are not responsible nor do they know if someone uses their program improperly.

There is a great potential for abuse of this program. The bottom line is that this is my computer and I do not want a program installed on it that I do not authorize. I am not a minor, LOL.

I assure you I am the legitimate owner of the computer infected. It belongs to me, I am the owner of a small business. I repair Plasma and LCD TVs as a authorized service center for major manufactures.

I have 5 computers on peer to peer LAN. Mine is the one infected the others are clean. I could Fdisk, reformat and reinstall the OS and app to eliminate Webwatcher but I do not want to do all that work.

A few ways to go, I would try them all.

Create a new Restore Point <-- Very Important


Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point

You can try and run this remover

Ultraview is the name by which WebWatcher is detected as spyware



Please download SuperAntiSpyware Free (http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE)
Install the program

Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
Check: Perform Complete Scan
Click Next to start the scan.

Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next <-- Important
Then, click Finish

It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
Click: Preferences
Click the Statistics/Logs tab
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log
It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)

Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

I hope all is well with you.

Thanks for all the help, I followed your instructions to the letter, first I installed and ran "http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-ultraview.html" and than I ran "SuperAntiSpyware Free" Of Course I made sure I updated both and created my restore point first.

Very interesting, neither Detected Webwatcher but Spybot did. I then attempted to remove the ATWW from the System32 folder, to my surprise it worked, I could never remove this before, the system would not allow me because files were in memory. I then ran spybot and webwatcher is GONE.

Something else very interesting!! When I rebooted my computer Windows update wanted to install Service Pack 3, LOL, I had done that more than a month ago. I noticed that my computer is now running on Service pack 2. It must have reverted back???

I did NOT install sevice pack 3. Should I do that? I thought that if I did I might recover my infection!

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Viewpoint, it installs without your knowledge or consent, uses system resources and basically is not needed for anything.



A few things to point out.

Anti Virus Software<---You have both Symantec and Mcafee running, not recommended as two AVs will take a big bite out of your system resources and bog your system down, just keeping one good one, keep it updated and run a scan about once a week is all you need, your call but you need to uninstall one of them.


C:\Program Files\Max Registry Cleaner <---Legit program but not recommended. Unless you know exactly what its removing you can disable your system...these programs do at times remove the wrong entry. I have been around computers since windows 3.1 and have never had any need for a registry cleaner.


C:\Program Files\SpywareDetector<---Another legit program but its rated 16 out of 19 spyware products. Would not be my choice for any of my systems.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
