Virtumonde Problem

Hi, I have downloaded and run S&D and a couple of other malware removal programs but they were unable to remove virtumonde infections. I have removed MCAfee's virus checker as also have AVG virus checker (but have some McAFee stuff for safer online web pages e.t.c.). Also removed bit torrent as is a p2p program. If you can help in anyway it'd be really appreciated! I have run a hijack this and this the log:

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

I am not sure what you are doing with McAfee/AVG 8. I personally run AVG 8 and you want to view this information:

Looks to me like both antivirus programs are running at the same time, and I would uninstall one of those.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

I don't see it and I don't know if they allow the firewall as freeware, though I have several good free firewalls available. First things first.

1) Even though we still have more to do, you should have gotten some relief from the popups caused by Vundo, combofix removed a lot of files.

we first need to complete the McAfee removal because the leftover junk can only cause you problems. Here is what I still see:

The system indeed is now getting less/no pop ups which is great. So I have used that program to remove all McAfee components so I should I have only AVG running now. I chose Comodo as my firewall service and got SafeSurf with it (hope that was ok?).

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

3) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Hi again!

(a) Utorrent: Before I put my first log on this forum I used remove progams to remove Utorrent however I have removed that folder now and also one I found in My Programs with remnants of the p2p software. Sorry about that.

(b) ASK: I have unchecked it so it no longer appears in Firefox but I would like the remove it. Do you have any recommended ways for me to do this?

I have downloaded ATF, removed Vundo folder/files and used Hijack to remove files. I have then used Malwarebytes per instruction.

As for the computer's performance:
I have only just had time to complete those tasks and so will surf the net for an hour or so and restart to see how things are working. But from what I can tell *touch wood* things are running much faster again and I haven't had random pop-ups in a while so that is great. I will get back to you soonish.

Update...

So the computer is running quicker again now. Still no pop-ups. I have however run AVG Free which has found various nasties in systemrestore but I don't dare let it try and tackle them without your say so. Also SpywareDoctor has found evidence of RogueAntiSpyware.MS_Antivirus and Adware.WebSearcg_Toolbar in addition to Trojan.Generic. I have not yet run Spybot S&D again as AVG is still running.

If all is running as it should be, then proceed to these next steps.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Scan with MBAM to make sure we got all of the junk, no need to post a clean scan results.

Update AVG 8 and scan the system, let me know that all is well and I will close your topic.

Matt, move that folder: C:\327882R2FWJFW\PV.CFEXE to your Recycle Bin and let it set there for a few days to make sure it is not needed, then empty the Recycle Bin.

Finish all of the instrucions and once that is done, consider this free program from Microsoft:

MBAM: is free to do what you wish with. I would consider it as a good on demand scanners if you have the room on your drive. Uses no resources unless you run it.
