View Full Version : Multiple Problems-Browser Hijacked+(logs)
I've followed the directions on actions to be taken prior to posting the log produced by hijackthis.
I performed an on-line scan using Panda which identified 150+ potential spyware problems and two viruses. Since I just ran a full system scan using my Norton Antivirus I was surprised. I reran Norton which identified 4 "potential" problems but could not fix.

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.
Please download ewido anti malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a free version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu
Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
then launch ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido anti malware.
reboot back to normal mode, post the ewido report and a log from a fresh hjt scan
Followed your instructions and the latest logs are too large for this response. I've tried cut and paste and file attachment and either way the results are exceed your allowed space. Suggestions?

the ewido report may be large because of detected cookies, can you edit out the cookie detections to make it smaller ?
then post the edited log.
be sure that you dont remove detected files from the list ;)
I didn't see anything listing "detected files". The bulk of report consisted of "system volume information/restore" concluding with "cleaned with backup".
I also removed all cookies displayed concluding with "cleaned with backup"
Hope this helps. I have the original report so I can send it in sections if you can give me something more specific to look for.

Sorry it took so long to respond. kept getting an error when attempting to initiate scan. Finally did it this am and looks like there is still a virus and two "potentially dangerous" items found. The number of spyware cookies is down frm over 500 last time.

Out of curiosity, I decided to try and run Spybot again. As before, it identified problems. But unlike before, when I selected the "fix" option, the window did not close but instead the repair seems to have worked.
It probably makes obsolete the previous note with Panda log.
I'll run another Panda scan and submit the log from that.
I've run another Panda scan after successfully running Sybot and the report is attached. It appears Spybot removed one of the hijack programs but there is still one left along with a virus and 80+ spyware cookies.
What do you suggest next?

Download and Save Blacklight (http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml) to your desktop:
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > scan then > next
You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"
note: if the blacklight log is large just post the first 20 lines of it

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
IE/Spyad (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:

I'm overwhelmed by all the options to protect against re-occurrences of the mess we just resolved. I've printed the tutorials and will select and install from the variety of software available.
