View Full Version : PCProtectionCenter2008/default.html/smitfraud-c.gp malware

Hi everyone. Subject line displays some of the possible pointers toward my ultimate problem. FYI I have NOT installed the PC Protection Center 2008. Whatever bug I got directs me to the website pc-security-updates.com/?aid=373.0, replaces my desktop wallpaper with the c:\Windows\default.htm file, which also has a hyperlink to the same site, and gives "Windows Security Center" popups which also direct to the site. I would probably ignore this if the popups weren't so frequent and the wallpaper just plain annoying.

Used SB S&D to scan, with the results being "Smitfraud-C.gp" and "Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.TaskManager" issues. The first references the "default.htm" file which replaces my wallpaper, the second references the registry changes disabling the Task Manager (UGH!!). Selected "fix selected problems" got the checkmarks indicating problems fixed. However, upon rescan, the same issues are discovered, and the symptoms described above continued.

Used my Sophos virus scan program, no viruses detected. Used TrendMicro HouseCall, which basically identified vulnerabilities in Windows. Finally downloaded HJT and so here is the logfile.
