Windows XP Home Svc Pack 3
No Internet Explorer (Removed after infection)
Acquired Smitfraud.C-GP while trying to download a keygen (for software I own)

Run multiple spyboy scans in normal and safemode.
ID'd "C:\WINDOWS\default.htm" - changed file name and removed in normal & safe modes.

Desktop has been changed from pic to Warning with a link to download spyware software (haven't clicked it I am aware of how smitfraud operates).

I ran spydoctor and it also ID'd
*Fake Alert
*Virtumonde
Wouldn't remove (didn't pay for it)

Below is my HJT Log: Please help me!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

No matter what you say you own, you download that junk you are going to get infected.

No Internet Explorer (Removed after infection)
You will likely need IE to download the tools we will use.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post only the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not /COLOR]need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

[COLOR="red"]Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, you may delete Smitfraudfix from the computer, we are finished with that tool.

1) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Should I run combofix in safemode or normal?

I will always request safe mode in the instructions if it is necessary. You can run combofix in normal mode.

Thanks

The HJT log is clean of malware, let's do some cleaning and get a second opinion.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O16 - DPF: {193C772A-87BE-4B19-A7BB-445B226FE9A1} (ewidoOnlineScan Control) - http://downloads.ewido.net/ewidoOnlineScan.cab
(obsolete)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

How is the computer running?

Thanks

How is the computer running?
Unless I missed it I can not see where you gave me any feedback on that question?

This is the next bridge we must cross.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Some information online: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22Error+Occured+While+Loading+%27savrt32.dll%27&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=
My best advice would be to contact Symantec tech support for instructions: http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/index.jsp

Let's continue with the cleanup, good job:bigthumb: getting Recovery Console installed, some information for you.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Scan with MBAM to make sure we got all of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Let me hear what's happpening with Symantec, I would like to know you have a working antivirus program that is scanning clean before I close your topic. I will post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.

K,

Turned off System Restore about to reboot now then reactivate it.

You've been an amazing help man. I will probably remove symantec and reinstall or install mcafee off my bro's La Salle support page. I still have windows bit defender going strong and no more keygens for me!

Symantec can be hard to remove, here is a tool they make available:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

I used to use McAfee but it got as hugh and resource intense as Symantec so I switched to:

MBAM ran a clean scan! I'm free!

Thanks a billion.
Hmmm...well if I weren't going to use Symantec or McAfee is this (AVG8.0) the best free AVS out there? Which do you recommend I download? I've got absolutely no problem with gettign rid of Symantec (following your directions of course, which I am about to read now)...I won't remove it till I have a suitable replacement.

I carefully try to avoid recommending, I did tell you what antivirus program I use. You would be surprised how may infected computers come to me with no antivirus or out of date antivirus. I really think it is not as important the car and it is the driver:laugh:

She is purrin like a kitten. I installed AVG and it is gettin the job done. How did you learn all of this stuff? I dabbled a bit with HJT myself, but past checking it's results line by line in google, I've got no other resource. Usually I just run my scans in safe mode, but you, man you've got some hands on talent.

About ten years ago I picked up my first infection and went to Dell forums and asked for help. I ran into a helper who must have thought he saw something in me and became my mentor. Here are free online opportunites but it is not easy.

Phil,

Thanks so much, I am going to look through these resources and definately at least get working on better understanding HJT.

I'd still be messing with spybot scans without you, so once again, thanks a ton.
