I received several virus yesterday it started with MS Antivirus 2008. Which locked up everything. I used Adware SE personal, then Spy bot s&R with current difinitions. I am now left with Virtumonde and Virtumonde.dll. I ran spybot several times and it removed it but still shows up again. I am accessing this by my laptop since my desk top will not allow me to access this website or microsoft. I still get pop ups, unable to access the windows automatic updates and in the bottom right corner next to the clock it says"virus alert!" Below is from hijackthis. I would appreciate any assistance thank you.

You have a multiple collection of malware on this system:red:

Your version of HJT is outdated, drag it to the trash and download and install the latest version by Trendmicro

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your desktop.

Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

Disable the TeaTimer, leave it disabled until we're done or it will prevent fixes from taking

Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Hello,

Malwarebytes removed some nasty stuff, I am sure there is more to remove we can't see.

Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab
Select any instances of "Privacy Protection" you find in there and press the delete button on the right. Hit ok below > apply in previous window.

Remove these with HJT.

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your

Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all

inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Hello,

I competed the combofix and the hijack. After completing the combofix it put a couple of extra file on the desk top: a Quick launch folder, User data folder and a brndlog text document. Here are the files you requested. thank you.

Hello,

Try removing this with HJT
O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - (no file)

I am looking over your Combofix log and will be back shortly

Your log looks fine :bigthumb:

C:\Program Files\Uniblue\RegistryBooster 2 <--- Just a word of warning about using Registry Cleaners, this is a legit program but removing the wrong entry or entries ( and some times they do ) can disable your system. I have been around computing since Windows 3.1 and have never had any need for any programs like this, your call but I would uninstall it.

How are things running now ??

Hello,

The computer is working well now. :) I tried removing the below file with HJT like you asked. I removed it and it said it deleted, but when I re-run HJT is showed back up.
O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - (no file)

Also you recommended to uninstall C:\program files\uniblue\RegistryBooster 2 how do I remove it. I did not see it in add or remove program files.

Hello Ed,

Try removing that entry in Safemode.

To Enter Safemode

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html)

That's one of the pitfalls of Uniblue, they sometimes hide the uninstall from you. Did you look under both Registry Booster and Uniblue?

You may have to go to C:\Program Files\Uniblue\RegistryBooster 2, not sure if its in Uniblue or RegistryBooster 2 but you should see an uninstall in one of those folders. We have been getting logs from posters that have Uniblue installed and they never installed it so sometimes this may come bundled with something else.

Let me know the outcome and we can dig deeper if we have to.

Ken,

I tried in safe mode and was unable to locate the program file under uniblue or registrybooster.

Hello Ed,

I was referring to removing this with HJT in Safemode
O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - (no file)

Registrybooster2 <-- Is there a little icon of a wrench on your system tray down by the clock ??

Open Hijackthis
Go to Misc Tools> Open Uninstall Manager.
Click on Save List.
The list will open in Notepad.
Copy and Paste the List into this thread

Ken,

Went in safe mode and deleted. Still shows up when I run the scan. Here is the scan you requested. Also there was no wrench in the system tray.

Hi,

It looks like Registry Booster was installed at one time and was removed, looking over your Combofix log it appears that it has been removed .

Where you able to remove this?
O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - (no file)

No not yet, went into safe mode and deleted it but it keeps showing up after.

Do this in safemode and see if it is removed

Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab
Select any instances of "Privacy Protection" you find in there and press the delete button on the right. Hit ok below > apply in previous window.

Let me know

Glad things are running well for you :bigthumb:

ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Hijackthis <---Your call, hopefully you won't need it again, if you do you can redownload it

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
