Weird Syptoms but no virus?

Hi, recently after I installed Sp3 for xp, the automatic updates would download but not install for some reason, and downloading each update seperately didn't solve the problem. also, I'm unable to use system restore even though I allowed max. space for restoration points. recently, my pc got VERY unstable with frequent crashes and freezes. finally, Avg's processes crash every time I try to do a system scan. even after reinstallions and rollbacks, after the crash it starts a scan by itself, and finishes within a few mins, even though i have almost 150gbs of data.

1 more thing, both firefox and IE could not connect to most servers for some reason, including this forum, so I ended up using chrome beta from google. which worked without any problems.

I recommend that you first uninstall SP3 and afterwards post back a fresh HijackThis log, please :)

ok, small problem.
when I try to uninstall SP3 from Add/Remove, it takes half an hour saying 'running process' and then I get a 'The system cannot find the file specified' error and 'SP3 was not uninstalled'.

Is system restore running?

If so, you can try to revert system to some restore point before SP3 installation.

yes, system restore is running, but there are way too much data I will lose if I restore to before I installed SP3, lots of programs I cant get again. Is there another way ?

You can backup data created after SP3 installation before that.

If you have no image taken before SP3 installation I think that is pretty much the only way.

According to your HJT log you may have installed SP3 while you were infected.

That might result in corrupted installation. As you have no restore points and SP3 doesn't seem to be uninstallable, we have only few options.

- backup important stuff and reformat & re-install
- restore from drive image if you have one
- contact Microsoft and ask for help
- or I can redirect you to some windows forum

Let me know which one you choose.

Before I Installed sp3, I scaned this pc with avg, malwarebytes' anti malware, and of course spybot. It all looked clean. I will try the microsoft forums, even though I doubt they will be much help compared to you guys. But thanks anyway, I very much appreciate your help
