Spybot recommends reboot during scan, Windows Security Alerts, Virtumonde etc.

We desperately need help. Our laptop was infected with a lot of problems while surfing the net and from the past 2 days, I have been able to resolve some problems but still there are many issues unresolved. I use this laptop for banking, trading and lot of important stuff and my wife use it for her research purpose in the University. It is very important and urgent for us to make this laptop secure before using it further. Please help us resolve the issues.

Background:
While surfing the net 2 days back, it flashed many messages that it is infected with viruses and I should run anti-virus. It
(a) changed the desktop background
(b) changed the clock to 'VIRUS ALERT'
(c) changed the "product id" in the "General" tab in the "System Properties"
(d) didn't show the "DRIVE C" label

After looking on internet, I was able solve the above problems.

Further issues:
After that I ran Spybot and it showed a lot viruses, trojans like Virtumonde, smitfruad-c.mvsps. I do not remember the names of others. Spybot cleaned some of them, but not Virtumonde.

During the checking stage of running Spybot, it asked to reboot. Specifically it flashed the following message: "It is recommended that you reboot and scan again. If you want to do this, click "Yes", save all documents and reboot". I clicked NO twice and continued with the scan.

In the bottom panel, where the check progress is shown, it showed this, at the stage, where it asked me to reboot: Running bot check (137254/299152: Virtumonde.dll)

After the scan was over, I ran Spybot again and still the reboot problem occured again while running the scan.

I then used PC Tools Spyware Doctor and it helped remove some of the viruses and trojans.

Just to make sure that the laptop is fine, I again ran Spybot but again the reboot problem occured mid-scan.

I am also getting - "Windows Security Alert" messages at the right hand bottom corner in the toolbar. There is a red balloon. I suspect this is fake alert.

To summarize, I am still still getting reboot problem while running Spybot and Windows Security Alert. It shows that Automatic Updates are turned off. But when I goto Automatic Updates via the Control Panel, I see that Automatic Updates are already turned on.

After doing all this, I ran Hijackthis. Below is the log of Hijackthis. Please help us in resolving the above problems. I suspect our laptop is still not free of viruses/trojans. Both me and my wife are dependent on this laptop for our work. I hope I have described the issues well, if anything is not clear, please let me know. Desperately seeking help, thanks a ton in advance.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

If you take the time to read the directions, you will see stuff like this:

In the "Before you Post" instructions it states exactly what to do. You bring the computer to me when I have no idea what the tools you ran have removed. As stated above, this is a tough infection, Spybot S&D can not remove it, few tools can, it usually takes several run in tandem with each other. If you want me to pick up where you left off, I will do my best. Follow these insturctions for starters.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

First, thanks for taking time out to help us.

I think I might have solved the problem. Before you replied to my post, I tried a couple of things and it seems problem has been resolved but I would like your opinion.

I did the following (after I posted my problems and before seeing your post this morning):
1) Ran MalwareBytes AntiMalware in safe mode, it removed some viruses/trojans
2) Ran SuperAntiSpware in safe mode, it further removed the remaining viruses/trojans

Then to further check I ran three anti-virus programs:
1) Spyware Doctor
result: no infection/virus/trojan found
2) McAfee
result: no infection/virus/trojan found
3) Spybot
result: no infection/virus/trojan found

Spybot ran smoothly without any mid-scan recommendation of reboot :) I am not getting "Windows Security Alert" anymore. No pop-us, nothing. Laptop is running smoothly now.

You have a lot of leftover junk and because much of this infection is hidden from HJT, I can not say it has been removed, not having seen the results of the tools I use, or even the tools you used for that matter. If you want to clean the junk and see what happens, then do this.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop

Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Disable SpywareDoctor: From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard". (Turn it back on when you finish)

4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Just one question: shall I now enable the tea timer (Spybot) and Activate OnGuard (Spyware Doctor) ? Any other changes you might wanna suggest?

Yes...enable all of your protections. As far as anything else, please review those links from experts, I will let them do my talking for me. They have forgotten more than I know.

I enabled all protections and just to make sure, I ran Spybot. It ran smoothly without any interruptions of mid-scan recommendation to reboot. No infections/viruses/trojans. Overall, system is working fine now. I will keep monitoring it and if I find anything suspicious, I will get back to you.
