I have succeeded in installing spybot 1.6 and letting it do its thing. However, I can't reboot into normal mode, my wallpaper is black. Please tell me what info you need to help rid me of this meddlesome pest.

Post the HJT log in Normal Mode, read the directions carefully, says nothing about posting in Safe Mode.

when I reboot, it flicks off and reboots again; it won't accept normal mode - I chose networking as I wasn't able to go online in just "safe".

Thanks for letting me know, you may have problems other than malware that I can not help with? Keep in mind when you are online in that mode none of your security programs are running so you are very vulnerable. Do not stay online like that longer than absolutely necessary. Let's first see if we can't get you into normal mode.

Boot the computer and into "Safe Mode".
bring up Task Manager (alt/ctl/del) or right click the Taskbar and choose Task Manager.
Select file: then New Task Run
either use the browse button to get to this path and double click on msconfig.exe or copy/paste this information into the Run box.
C:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe
This will bring you back to msconfig screen.
From there you can select the boot.ini tab and unselect the /SAFEBOOT check box.
Restart your PC and you should be ok

sorry for delay - followed yr instructions, when I opened boot.ini tab the safe mode was not checked on, nor was any other. For further detail, when I reboot, there is a brief flash of a blue screen with lots of material, actually only the top 2/3 of the screen shows, then it boots me back to the home screen (Compaq) then to the screen with the different mode options.

Hi Jack, I may not be able to help with this one, could be it is a Windows problem and you would be better off at a forum that can help with that. Let's see if you can run combofix, you should be able to download it and it can be run in safe mode.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.
