Hello actualeyes
Welcome to Safer Networking.
Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
You have a bit of a mess going on, I need you to read this as this is the latest avenue of attacks by malware writers.
We have noticed that many people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.
Because of this, we changed our malware forum's policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programs, volunteer analysts will refuse their help.
We do not ask you to do this without reason.
P2P (File Sharing ) programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.
Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.
This article from InfoWorld illustrates the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/...ID-theft_1.html (http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html)
When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.
C:\Program Files\Serials3k <--This is used to download illegal software, unless its uninstalled we won't be able to help you, you can uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Then post a new HJT log

Hi Ken,
I think I have succeeded in being rid of it with HijackThis.
Serials3K was not listed in the installed software under Add/Remove Programs so I was unable to remove it that way but I think I have removed that with HijackThis too.
Did you see a P2P program I was using? Im am happy to delete it.
There are no apparent remaining effects, nothing found by SpyBotS&D or HJT from what I can see.
I appreciate your efforts and hopefully your confirmation.
Cheers,
Andrew.

Good Morning,
Just because the entry is gone on a Hijackthis log does not mean the infection is gone ,there just registry entries, did you delete the files associated with the entries??? I want to add at this point that you posted for help and if you start removing things with HJT or any other programs on your own this forum and I won't be responsible if you bork your system, remove the wrong entry or entries with HJT and you can make your system inoperable.
Open Hijackthis
Go to Misc Tools> Open Uninstall Manager.
Click on Save List.
The list will open in Notepad.
Copy and Paste the List into this thread

Thanks for your patience Ken.
I am challenged by the different timezones - you are saying good morning after I have gone to bed ;-) I have a reasonably clue as to what I am doing, and hope that you don't mind too much me taking a few steps - pull me up if I'm obnoxious, and the usual caveats accepted.

I don't mind helping you but keep in mind that if your damage your system with removing things and running scans on your own that this forum and myself will not be responsible.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

but wait... there's more yet.
Clearly still infected.
I had left TeaTimer on because otherwise the machine would just blue-screen... Now I have turned it off and am running Malwarebytes again. Cross fingers it doesn't blue-screen.

This time it seems to have worked fine.
I have run it again and it has zero infections found.
Anything else?

This is still installed  Your computer, if you post back for help and its still installed you will receive no help.
How are things running now?

Seriously Ken - this Serial3K is not installed. To my knowledge we've not used it purposefully but I have 3 children ;-) It is NOT in the installed software reports as you have seen. We have NOT reinstalled it.
What happens reliably now is that when I turn on Spybot's TeaTimer about 7 entries are put in the registry including that one, VIE1, VIE3, VIE9 and some other gumph.
If I leave TeaTimer off I have no problems - no infections noted by HJT, Spybot, Malwarebytes or Combofix.
When I run the file remove for the files listed in the entries in Combofix it does not find them or delete anything.
It is just that TeaTimer seems to do something to trigger the writing of these old registry entries - it puts up warnings about it saying that they are on the blacklist and denied but they still get written.
Why don't you uninstall Spybot Search and Destroy for the time being as it's outdated anyway, the latest version is 1.6, but don't install it yet, I will link you to the new version when we're done.
Drag Combofix to the trash and grab a fresh copy as its updated on a regular basis . Run it and post the log and we can see if there is anything leftover that has to be removed.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.
In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net
2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.
