Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
Before we start, I see both Symantec and McAfee running on this Desktop. See this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/2003/s1407/38s07/38s07.asp
My guess is you want to run McAfee and the Symantec items (which is hard to remove) are leftovers. That being the case and if you have used the uninstaller in Add Remove programs, look at this information for removal tools.

If I am guessing wrong...stop amd make me aware.
1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)
2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.
Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. No harm appears to have been done, and we will get Recovery Console installed before we finish (if you do not have a Windows XP Operating System CD)
1) J:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05 <<< Java needs and update, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
3) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
How is the computer running now?
Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Make sure you read that information about Prefetch and do understand if any malware is running from Prefetch, and at times hackers run it from there, you will not have removed it. Most of what MBAM found is quarantined in combofix and in infected System Restore files which we will take care of right after Recovery Console is installed. Review the instructions again and have a look at this information and then I will try to make it a bit easier to understand.
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif
Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC_whatnext.gif
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC_AllDone.gif
1) You have Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2
2) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 <<< on this page
3) Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) <<< the file you need, your system.
4) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=535D248D-5E10-49B5-B80C-0A0205368124&displaylang=en
When you click that link, then click the "Download" button, then choose "Save this file now" and save it to your Desktop. Once the download is complete, go to the Desktop and you will see the file. Now look at the picture above and drag that file to the combofix icon and follow the directions choosing NO when the option come up since we do not need to run combofix now. Then post that file:
C:\CF-RC.txt <<< so I can be sure RC was installed.
Thanks...Phil

This may sound stupid, like Computing 101 but all my icons on the desktop are in the toolbar and not on the "desktop" and I can't drag and drop.

Also do you suggest that I install prefetch?

Try this first:
Right click a blank spot on the Desktop and click Arrange Icons By. Make sure Show Desktop Icons is checked.
That should do it, if it does not then try this:
Right click the Desktop and click Properties. Click the Desktop tab and Customize Desktop. Click the Restore Default button. Apply/OK where
needed.
Thanks

okay that worked---but when I dragged it over the combofix small window came up and left but nothing since. It didn't say that I installed the rc.

Dave, look for the file. You know where your C:\ (drive) is:
C:\CF-RC.txt <<< so I can be sure RC was installed.

I can not install Recovery Console for you and the installation is certainly not mandatory. Here is some information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.
If you want this valuable, free tool installed on the computer, you will have to do it. I do not see how I can make it any plainer or easier to install. Perhaps you would like to try again?

I'm going to reboot and try again---it seemed like it tried to install--the screen kind of flashed and then nothing happened--------------------------------Phil-thanks again-please don't lose patience with me--I'd rather be doing a brake job on my car than doing this.

Dragged it to Combofix and the little progress meter window did its thing--the hourglass came on then all the desktop icons disappeared for a second and came back--did a search for the file --J drive is my harddrive----and its still not here so I guess I have to go with no rc.---------
How does dropping it to Combo install the rc?

How does dropping it to Combo install the rc?
You would have to ask sUBs the creator of combofix about that.
(got something to do with a run command built into combofix)
If you wish to try to install the RC without using combofix, you can sure try, just that I have not installed it like that myself.
To move on without installing RC:
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
Remove infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Run MBAM again to be sure we missed none of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.
Update McAfee and scan your system to make sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have any problems with McAfee, contact tech support for instructions.

did the system restore process and am now running Mbam...tried to uninstall combofix using your instructions but the same thing happens--prompted to run and then then progress meter runs and then the computer flashes and then nothing--just a fine working computer and combofix is still on the desktop. Will this be a problem not to get rid of combofix?

Just delete it manually, right click then delete. The go to the c:\ drive and delete any instance of combofix you see there, including this folder:
J:\QooBox\Quarantine\ <<< that folder and contents

okay that deleted it...mbam is running then I'll run Mcafee as you instructed...will we then be able to tackle my wifes laptop which is more screwy than my desktop? It has so many popups it is unuseable. I have a HJT file ready.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html
To Windows everything is a serious error. Always record the error message exactly (word for word) then Google it, most often you will get an answer.
We just removed nasty malware that had no business being placed on the computer.
