Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

On 2007-07-29, 14:13 steamwiz helped clean your computer, kind of soon to be back? Are you following the advice he gave you at that time?
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
You really need to involve all users in that information so you can stop getting infected.

it seems to only be effecting my user out of three users
You have a nasty infection, I can't see the item you mention but it could be hidden. You need to run these tools when signed in as administrator. (not a user) We will probably need to see HJT logs from the other users later?

Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks

pskelley, Thank You for responding to my problem!!

Yes it is too soon to be back here with another problem.

Yes I was following the advice steamwiz; however I have been lax in following that advice, for that i apologize.

I have also noted that the problem (browser hijacking) has been shared on the other users of this computer, they just did not get the windows background problems. I have fixed my background problem with "Doug's Windows XP Security Console", sorry for jumping the gun on that one.

Here are the logs you requested I ran SDFix twice once as user "Dad" and once as "admin" and a new HJT log

This will start the scan and open a log. <<< close the program until we need it later.

2) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = file:///C:/Program%20Files/Netscape/Users/binker/bookmark.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
(next item is damaged)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

How is the computer running now?

I got the things done in the order requested with a few minor glitches.

Viewpoint, I agree that this thing needs to go however it does not show up in add/remove. I now have it stopped loading by using the system configuration utility. I have looked at revo uninstaller It does not show up there either.

Should I go through registry and delete stuff manually or reinstall it looking to delete it from add/remove

ATF Cleaner would not run from .exe file found a zip version from their website which ran fine.

Malwarebytes ran fine and log for it is included along with HJT log

System seems to be working at it's ability, as old as it is.

Thank You

Ken

Bump,

Hi Pskelley,

Does my system look clean to you now?

Thank you much for all your help.

Ken

Hi Ken, I'm sorry but I did not get my notification as I am supposed to when you posted. I can't tell if you are clean or not because you are running System Configuration Utility in Selective Startup mode.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
I have no idea what you have turned off. Return to Normal Mode and create a HJT log, then you can return to Selective Startup without a reboot.

Post that log so I can have a look. The log I am looking at has no malware showing, are you having any malware issues at all?

Thanks...Phil

I always respond within 12 hours, if that happens again, PM me to let me know: http://forums.spybot.info/member.php?u=233

If you have not done so, delete SDFix from the computer, we are finished with it.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks...Phil

Thanks for returning your information, you can see from what combofix removed, you were still infected.

1) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Viewpoint Manager Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Folder::
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again and remove Viewpoint. The last HJT log was clean. If the computer is running normally, then this is the next important step.

3) I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

pskelley,

1&2 got rid of that nice piece of work (things like that should be pushed back onto the original supplier, AOL 10 times over) there are enough problems with spyware/malware crap around that seemingly legit programs like that just piss me off. sorry rant over too much wine.

3. recovery console installed from slipstream windows XP sp2 disk i made during last computer crash necessitated reinstall of OS.

No C:\*CF-RC.txt* file that search could find.

Thank you for all your help,

it appears that I should be running tea timer to help in preventing such problems in the future.

Thanks for the feedback, let's remove combofix from your computer.
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

I suggest you clean System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

I suggest you update and give MBAM a run to make sure we missed none of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

I would update and scan the system with Avast4 to make sure it is scanning right and clean.

Here is information from security experts, that should help with security questions.

pskelley,

THANK YOU very much for all your work in helping me to get rid all the junk,
Avast and MBAM both report clear. Now I can work on installing XP SP3 (access denied during install), Microsoft has reported remedies for that problem.

Again thank you,

Ken

and I really like your sig

Hey Ken, thanks for the feedback. I had problems with the SP3 install myself and purchased the CD for $10.00 (S&H was 6.00/4.00 for the CD)
I would also like to say Microsoft has created help site here:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

Good luck for the installation.
