The PC Antivirus web page opens routinely, preventing access to this web page and many others when using IE. I must use AOL in order to access the forums from the problem PC.

Followed the directions as far as they went:
Ran Spybot in safe mode until a clean scan was repeatable.
Also ran AVG 8.0 Free in safe mode. Always finds viruses, moves them to the virus vault, and they are back on the next scan.
Ran Kaspersky online scanner. Only found two Adware objects, no viruses reported.
Ran Hijack This. Log file follows:

In safe mode, I cleaned with spybot, and then AVG Free, until all scans repeated clean. A normal reboot returned the problems, and so I cleaned again in safe mode. I then deleted the mgxfpq.dll file that came along at the time of the problem, and deleted that registry line using Hijack this.

Now, there are only a few symptoms remaining. Your site and some others remain blocked when using IE. Also, AVG has problems running scans from the normal boot. No problem from Safe mode. Also, when windows shutdown, there is a failure message. It is quick, something like PCARM**.exe failed to execute. Other than that the PC seems to be running fine, at normal speeds.

This is the latest log, after the above work. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chuck

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Pinned (sticky) to the top of the forum and posted above are the directions. You would benefit greatly from reading them as you would see.

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. Also, helpers may think you are already being assisted because of the post count.

The Waiting Room
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=37

If you still need help, post a new HJT log, and if possible the error message you are receiving "word for word" and any other comments you think will help.

Since it has been a week, if you do not respond within 24 hours, I will close the topic.

Thanks

I will run the updated spybot scan, restart, relog with HJT, and post shortly. I have read all of the material carefully and worked through it all as far as I could go. I deleted one program and it's registry line to stabilize the system a bit.

Thanks,

Chuck

This was the program and registry line I deleted previously.
O21 - SSODL: mgxfebsq - {F6D32E3F-02CC-4314-B702-1088ADAAEA39} - C:\WINDOWS\mgxfebsq.dll

Following is the HJT logfile from a moment ago, after updating and running Spybot, which found no problems.

Symptoms remain with irregular bootup success, and IE7 sites not recognized by the system, including safer-networking.org.

I will boot several times now and try to catch the full text of the various error messages.

Thanks,

Chuck

The system boots up successfully about half the time. When it fails, it stops in a variety of stages, from a blank screen to the desktop, frozen. On restart, the only message is "Loading PBR for Descriptor 2... done. " Sometimes at shutdown, there is a message that something failed to initialize, but it is too quick for me to read.

I will be here at my PC for about the next two hours.

That's the latest. Thanks again.

Hi Check, thanks for returning your information and the feedback, that line you removed:
C:\WINDOWS\mgxfebsq.dll <<< looks like a marker for a Smitfraud infection:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/mgxfebsq.dll-23870.html

I also see Vundo leftovers so that hidden infection is probably present also. Because of the first infection, you should read this information.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7344

I suggest patience, to identify the malware and remove it is going to take a while.

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post only the C:\rapport.txt

Thanks...Phil

FYI I am Clearwater, Fl EST and I usually repond early AM.

The PCTools registry scan showed lots of problems, claimed to fix the first six sections, and suggests buying the software to repair the remainder. Do you have a recommendation on that?

Not back to the PC until late tonight, Pacific time.

Have a great day.

The PCTools registry scan showed lots of problems,
Yeah, I don't recommend any tool that finds stuff and will remove it if you purchase something. SpywareDoctor is bad for this and I would not have that product on any of my computers.
Smitfraudfix found that infection, but it also found another bad infection that it can not fix. I believe combofix will clean it for us.

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts
hosts file corrupted !

After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the C:\rapport.txt, the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks...Phil

Things are definitely improving.... Three reports attached. Smithfraud report was done prior to combofix. Hijackthis report was done after combofix.

IE is now freed up. What next?

Thanks,

Chuck

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Delete Smitfraudfix from the computer, we are finished with that tool.

Read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tmp.reg
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bJTAIkkj.ini2

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6A87B991-A31F-4130-AE72-6D0C294BF082} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

How is the computer running?

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Your HJT log appears clean of malware also.

I will post this tutorial for you in case you can use it, this is certainly optional and your call.
How to Install Free version AVG 8.0 without LinkScanner feature
http://russelltexas.com/tutorials/avg8install.htm

This is the next important step:

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC_whatnext.gif

Thanks

Here's proof!

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Working on the AVG modification next.

Good job installing Recovery Console:bigthumb: here is a little information for you.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Remove combofix for the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update AVG and scan the sytem to be sure it is working right and scanning clean. If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close your topic.

Both scans show no problems, and the PC is running well. I dropped a donation on the spybot site in appreciation for the help.

This was interesting. Thanks for the help.

Unrelated, I believe, but here's another question. I have another PC that runs fine, although it is a little older and slower. No sign of malware from any scans that I have done. However, when I try to use IE7 to go to aol.com, the speed drops to a snail's pace. I can go to the same site on both of my other PC's, no problem. I installed the recovery console on this one, and I modified AVG as suggested, and it is no better. I have Spybot running in its resident mode as well as AVG. Is that the problem.

Any thoughts?

Chuck

No...those two programs work fine together. My suggestion would be to review the directions:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

Then start a "New Thread" here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22

and the next available helper will take a look and advise you.

Hope that helps
