My Thinkpad laptop has been infected by virtumonde. I have attached the HijackThis log below. I have also run combofix (unsuccessfully) before I found the forum. There's a particular dll (xxyxvppj.dll) in my windows/system32 directory that I have been unable to delete that I believe may be the source of the infection - this dll seems to be creating other dlls that get loaded. There's another suspicious directory (C:\Program Files\xeror/nwwia) that appears empty (I have hidden files displayed) that I can not delete either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, if you have not done so, please read this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282

If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. Help will be withdrawn should you not agree to their removal.
uTorrent <<< uninstall all p2p programs from your computer.

Please read and follow all directions carefully and in the numbered order.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\ <<< update your Java program, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyxVpPj.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yiunhodl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oxtkho.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ftuucphl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ynaeqylp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yazsjl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wgydys.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jPpVxyxx.ini2

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-
"AppInit_DLLs"="avgrsstx.dll"

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{EDB45228-1AEF-4FB5-827D-055D8A51F260}]

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EDB45228-1AEF-4FB5-827D-055D8A51F260} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyxVpPj.dll

(if you are positive the next two are safe, you may leave them)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.nytrack-1
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.tsttracker

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: wgydys.dll yazsjl.dll oxtkho.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

7) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

For your information, !KillBox saves backups in this folder, if you are done with it, delete the folder:
C:\!KillBox <<< this one

Here's what I did:

Uninstall utorrent
Uninstall 3 older versions of JRE
Reboot
Install JRE 6 U 7 (latest version from the Sun site)
Ran ResetTeaTimer.bat
Ran Combofix as instructed (it downloaded a newer version and rebooted) - log attached below
Ran Hijack This - found only two entries (both R0), did not find the BHO entry or the 020 entry. Checked both the R0 entries and fixed them
Ran ATF Cleaner as instructed
Ran Anti Malware as instructed - log below
Reboot
Ran Hijack This again - log below

So far, this seem to be running fine. Thanks for all your help.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Most of what MBAM found are quarantined in C:\!KillBox combofix and in infected System Restore files which we will take care of soon.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bnvcxdpt.dll <<< don't know if I missed this malware file but I am concerned about it causing us problems. Would you navigate to that System32 folder and delete that file in red, then empty the Recycle Bin. Let me know it is gone.

This is the next bridge we must cross:

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

I did not find the bnvcxdpt.dll anywhere. I had noticed it to be there before I ran Anti-Malware, but I think that it took care of that file.

I installed the recovery console and the following is the log:
WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Would you use Search Companion to make sure that file is not there:
Start > Search > All Files and Folders > enter bnvcxdpt.dll in the box and Search. Allow a little time there are a lot of files to search through. If Search Companion does not find it, then we will allow it is gone.

Good job installing Recovery Console, a little information for you.

Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

C:\!KillBox\ <<< delete that folder and the contents

Update MBAM and scan again to make sure we got all of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update Symantec and scan the system to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have any problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

Let me know all is well and I will close your topic.

I did search for the bnvcxdpt.dll file but did not find it. So, it appears to be gone for good.

I followed the other instructions and ran Anti-Malware again and got a clean report. You can go ahead and close the case.

Thank you very much for all your help with this.
