Removed malware: Can't enable Automatic Updates

I have been working on this machine for 5 days. It was infected with several viruses, including the Vundo trojan. I used Norton to find and remove it, but I still cannot enable Automatic Updates in order to run Windows Update. I did a Repair Installation of XP Pro and then reloaded SP2. The browsers are working again, but I need to work from Safe Mode to get anything done. I still cannot re-enable Automatic Updates.

Hi Michael Scott

If you reinstalled SP2 while still being infected (you are still infected; repair installation won't remove all malware), that might cause that you can't boot to normal mode. Service Pack installation while infected might even result in non-bootable computer. So chances are that we don't get your computer working like it should.

Anyway, let's try next to remove malware.

Create own folder for HijackThis and move it into that folder.

Rename HijackThis.exe to Michael.exe and post back a fresh HijackThis log, please :)
