View Full Version : virtumonde infection

I believe I am infected with the virtumonde virus. I have had Spybot and teatimer running on this laptop for
over a year. Recently Norton antivirus and Spybot said I had the virtumonde virus. I ran both programs to locate
and fix it. Now Spybot finds several infected files and asks to reboot to clean them all out. I say yes and it
continues scanning until it comes to another infected file. It then asks again to reboot to continue. I say yes
and it continues the scan. I have tried variations on this - doing a hard reboot when Spybot finds an infected
file, working in Windows safe mode etc. but nothing changes. I allowed my laptop to connect to the internet
(up to this time since I found the infection, I stopped that) but Spybot cannot connect to update (the last
update was within the last week.). The hard drive seems to run continuously in that mode. I have just
downloaded Hyjack from a second uninfected computer and did this scan on the infected laptop.
I did some research (a little knowledge is a dangerous thing) and read that one older version of Sun Java may
have had a loophole for this virus to get in. I think the infected laptop had that version. I have unistalled it
and deleted all of the Java directories left behind. The laptop has no Java on it now that I know of.

I can try again to run Hyjack on a normal Windows settings (but still not connected to internet) to get a more
complete listing. The continuosly running hard drive scares me and it seems to be extremely sluggish.
I appreciate any help you can give in cleaning this and help so it is not reinfected in the future.
Thanks,
Ken
PS I did copy the Hyjack log out of Notepad with word wrap turned off but it appears to wrap in when pasted in the forum thread page. sorry

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

1) IF TEATIMER IS ENABLED: We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) I need the HJT logs post in Normal Mode.

32) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Below are the two logs from HyjackThis and ComboFix. I have not been able to install
the Recovery Console because my original Windows disk which came with my Dell laptop
will not install it (It says the Windows XP version on the laptop is newer (probably
SP3?)). I tried going to the links provided to download the Recovery Console
but it just leads me to Microsoft's Support site with no way to download the file.
I did a search on Microsoft's site for the download with no luck. If you know of a
place to download an XP Home Edition SP3 version, please let me know.
I have not replaced Sun Java on the laptop and have kept it offline. I download the
programs you require and transfer it via memory sticks from another computer.
Thanks for all your help.

Thanks for returning you information and the feedback. You said:

because my original Windows disk which came with my Dell laptop
will not install itWe will give it another try once the malware has been removed. Please read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

HJT is our diagostic report of what the tools accomplished, as such it always needs to be run after the tools.

ComboFix 08-09-16.05 - Mitch 2008-09-19 11:52:25.1

Please post a new HJT.

I also want to comment that you still have Vundo files to remove manually, the combofix database would have to be hugh to contain every file name the hackers can dream up. I am saying this to remind you that you are still infected and the junk will download more, so stay offline except when you are working on the issue.

Thanks

My apologies, I can understand why the HyjackThis log should be the last thing run.
I mentioned staying offline because the readme that are referred to by the forum,
ask that you go online to update the Spybot and other software after installing them.
I have not done that - just installed from the links you provided.
Here is the latest log. I am not turning the laptop off in between your messages
for fear that rebooting will allow the virus to create more copies of itself.
Thanks

Please read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

HJT is not located safely, follow my instruction to correct this.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\byXOgheD.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fwaqcsnw.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kjetxdfr.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qnmfoikj.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\akxlsheq.ini

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{6BC03760-586E-4D52-9FCA-B4AC1415BF16}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\byXOgheD]
[hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\ShellExecuteHooks]
"{6BC03760-586E-4D52-9FCA-B4AC1415BF16}"=-

Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kBin19
C:\Temp\epr1

Save this as CFScript

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6BC03760-586E-4D52-9FCA-B4AC1415BF16} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byXOgheD.dll
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: brshia.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: byXOgheD - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\byXOgheD.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log. <<< follow the instruction in #6 to create the correct HJT log.

6) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks

I hopefully followed your directions correctly. After I ran Combofix with the CFscript installed, I did a HyjackThis scan as requested but none of the items you asked for me to mark for removal were there. I saved the HyjackThis log and posted it below. Ran ATF Cleaner then MBAM. I tried to do an update to the MBAM software by connecting to the internet on the infected machine but after a few minutes of no response I broke the connection and let MBAM run. It detected one virus installer which I let it remove. Should I try to reboot and connect to the internet again for MBAM updates then do a new scan?
Below is
Combofix log
HyjackThis log after Combofix
MBAM log
final HyjackThis log

Thanks

Everything looks good, I can not see where I received this information I requested?

How is the computer running now?
If you are not having malware problems, then this is the next step.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Sorry for not answering what I thought was a rhetorical question about how the computer was running. It does seem to have more pep. I rebooted then tried to install the Recovery Console from a second Windows XP disk (I have 2 computers) and it did install directly (not through ComboFix).
Part of the install of Recovery Console, it asked to connect to the internet for latest version. I did and also tried to download Spybot updates. Neither seem to work. Then I ran Norton antivirus software and it said I had a virus which it said it fixed. Spybot doesn't find anything other than Windows firewall is turned off (it is turned off for Norton's firewall)
I ran ComboFix and the log is below.
I am not connecting to the internet again on the infected laptop until you think it is OK.
I was hopeful this thing was conquered after the last message but Norton scan gives me pause.
Thanks

Then I ran Norton antivirus software and it said I had a virus which it said it fixed.I have no idea what Norton did or did not find since you provide no information about the item?

Remove combofix from the computer like this.

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

To be sure, clean the System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update Norton and scan you system, if it finds anything it can not deal with, please post that information this time.

If all is well, please let me know and I will close your topic.

I removed Combofix and reset my system restore. I connected to the internet and updated Norton Antivirus. Ran Norton and it found nothing. The time before it found trojan awax. It said it had "fixed" it. Spybot still does not update as it use to. When I manually update it, it would put up a screen which showed it updating then wait at the end for me to click finish. Now it reverts to the main screen without any delay. I thought I should uninstall it and reinstall. I also think the laptop is slowing down again. There are times I try to open a program and it just sits for a while.
I don't think it is completely corrected.
I have run a HyjackThis log for you below.
Thanks

Thanks for returning that feedback and the HJT log appears clean of malware.

Spybot S%D: be sure you have the newest version:
Spybot-S&D 1.6 has arrived! 8. July 2008
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2008-07-08.html

If you do, then it is possible you got a corrupted download, your antivirus program only needs to block a file or two it thinks is bad to cause this. I suggest you uninstall the progam in Add Remove Programs and download it again from the link I provided. Here is helpful information:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html
If you still have issues after that, ask the experts with the tool here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4

Here is information that should help with the other issues:
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php

A free tool that will help you keep stuff up to date:
https://psi.secunia.com/ <<< I want to say that I personally turn it off in MSConfig instead of running it all of the time and scan for problems once a month or so.

Safe surfing:bigthumb:

I reinstalled Spybot and it appears to be working and updating correctly. I scanned laptop with Spybot once again and came up with nothing. I have attached a final (I hope) HyjackThis log. I have a couple of questions. I am willing to buy MBAM Pro if the people here think it is worthwhile to prevent future attacks. I have Norton Internet Security and Spybot but would add MBAM. Do all these programs play well together? Is there some other software that can be recommended. I would accept a small hit on processing for additional protection.

Thanks for all your help. I know I couldn't have done it without you.

Thanks for taking the time to give me feedback. Most of your questions will be answered in the links I posted earlier. As far as MBAM (the creators are colleges) but I have not used the Professional version and personally only suggest freeware products. Here is the website:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and the free forum if you have compatibility questions:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?act=idx

I will say I see stuff in running processes I consider not needed, I posted the one link and will post it again and here is more information that will help if you apply it.
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

Thanks
