Hi
A friend was having problem with unwanted popups.
(Reporting she had Virus/malware, etc. and disabling Windows Updates)
So I said I'd take a look, but its turning into a nightmare.
Spybot cleared all, but on rebooting detected Virtumonde again
and Windows updates still won't turn on.
Went round that loop a number times, a scan takes nearly an hour, but still can't get rid of it. Research through Google tells me I'm not going to do this on my own.
Please can someone help me to get rid of it.
Thanks.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
Please do not allow McAfee to interfere with combofix, turn it off until you run it if necessary.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.
It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.
Thanks

Thanks for returning you information and the feedback, something strange about the way combofix started:
/wow section - STAGE 8
The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open.
But it seemed to run ok?
1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\ <<< Update Java, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ooqYyccf.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ooqYyccf.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\eohyatgl.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\endfpowy.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fccyYqoo.dll
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{4412CA94-30D3-4B6A-8F94-508F4D75A6A0}]
Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\CHRIS BLAKE\Application Data\PCPrivacyCleaner
C:\Documents and Settings\CAROLINE BLAKE\Application Data\PCPrivacyCleaner
C:\Documents and Settings\STEVE BLAKE\Application Data\PCPrivacyCleaner
C:\Documents and Settings\STEVE BLAKE\Application Data\VirusRemover2008
C:\Documents and Settings\STEVE BLAKE\Application Data\TmpRecentIcons
Save this as CFScript
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)
4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
*Cleaning Prefetch may results in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html
5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log.
How is the computer running?
Thanks

Hi
Ran the Java update
Ran the CFScript which caused a rebbot
On reboot Windows Update sitch back on :)
Although I've tried switching off McAfee it also did a scan bt only found ComboFix.
Ran ATF Cleaner
Installed and ran Malwarebyts' Anti Malware wichdid update itself.
It also found and removed lots, as you can see in the log.
PC seems to be much better. Windows updates seems to be swictched on now and working.
It says some components need updating in orderto use it.
I haven't updated them as I don't want to though anything extra into the mix without your say so while we're doing this.
And no Malware pops yet.
Below are the logs you reuqested.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Much of what MBAM located is in the combofix quarantine and infected System Restore files which we will clean soon.
This is the next bridge we must cross:
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/RC1-4.gif
Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Hey garth, was just chatting with a lady friend in the UK, she lives in Winchester where the Cathedral is, sure you know where that is.
Good job:bigthumb: installing Recovery Console, here is a little information.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.
Remove combofix from the computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png
Clean infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Update MBAM and scan to make sure we missed none of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.
Update McAfee and scan your system to make sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have any problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

Let me know that all is well at this point and I will close your topic.

Hi
Small world.
My first real job (IT support & dev), the company had its head office in Winchester so I spent a couple of weeks there. Very nice place, but no night life, very quiet. Now I live at the other end off the M3, close to it crosses the M25.
All the scans are clean now and the PC looks like it back to normal.
Many thanks for all your help.
I've now got Spybot, MBAM, HiJackThis and ATF-Cleaner on the PC.
Whats your advice with these.
I did plan on leaving there, but I don't know too much about the others.
Thanks for the information links.
I will acutlly read them ver the next week or 2.
I'm an Analyst/Programmer. Basicaly I program database applications.
I've never had to bother much about security or protection.
Over the past few years I've moved fom internal apps to web base ones.
So security and protection are becoming more and more important considerations. Even helping friends it seems to be moving away from "How do I do this...." to "How do I protect....", "Something strange keeps happening with my PC...." and what we've just been through.
A whole new asspect for me.

Thanks for the feedback, you asked:
I've now got Spybot, MBAM, HiJackThis and ATF-Cleaner on the PC. Whats your advice with these
I would keep them all but make sure they are not running (using resources) I run Spybot S&D a couple of times a month, MBAM once a month or so or when there may be a problem. Atf-Cleaner...you will not find a better, small cleaner anywhere. HJT..I have had a copy on all of my computers for ten or so years, during bad infections, the junk will even block the download. Here is some information about what HJT can do beside create a log.

Since you are IT, have a look at this malware site: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=11
The owner was a mentor when I started and many great folks help there including several of the "experts" who help here and teach at MRU. Plus, it's on that side of the pond and in the same time zone. And of course MRU is available for free training if you have an interest.
