Stubborn Virtumonde Infection -HJT Log inside

Hello,

I am having trouble getting rid of Virtumonde. I have run spybot S+D in safe mode, along with mcafee and avast scans, as well as online scans from Kaspersky and MS Onecare, but every time I reboot to normal mode it is back.

Also, each time I login I see a missing dll warning, for "opnmNeee.dll".

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy. It can get especially tricky since many of our tools will not run on Vista. I can only promise to do my best, if that works for you, continue.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

Hello,

Thanks for your help, however combofix will not run. I double click it, and the little loading bar pops up, then disappears. Same results when I do right click -> run as administrator.

I have disabled my antivirus and firewall software as per the tutorial, so that does not seem to be the problem. Any suggestions?

Yes...I suggest Vista is a pain with it's compatibility issues. This is a program that is being downloaded at the rate of a million times a month. We may be able to clean the computer without combofix, but it will surely not be easier.

Try removing combofix from the computer and downloading it like this:

You must rename it before saving it, save it to your Desktop.

Then run is as in the first instructions.

Hi,

You are not kidding about Vista compatibility. I tried what you suggested, and found the same results. In addition, I enabled XP compatibility mode for combofix, however it did not run.

It did do something though, namely changed the desktop background and disconnected the machine from the internet. I was able to restore internet connectivity by running repair in the network items control panel.

* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Have other users experienced similar problems with combofix and vista?
It's rare that combofix does not run, it is a simple point and shoot tool. I don't own Vista so I have not seen it on the Operating System.

C:\Program Files\HP\Dfawep\bin\hpbdfawep.exe Can you take a look at this item and assure me it is valid. Appear to be Hewlett Packard (HP) If you are unsure, scan that file here:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {15C4C6E5-BBF0-4466-ADE8-E71EB6CBF55B} - C:\Windows\system32\mlJBRjIB.dll (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run DISK CLEANUP: ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > DISK CLEANUP

Great, things are looking much better. No warning window about the strange dll file comes up when booting, and no popups occurred during a brief test of IE.

One strange thing though, my desktop background is black, and cannot be reset (all preview wallpapers show a generic image and do not load.) In addition, some icon images no longer appear. I believe this has to do with ComboFix and not the malware, as it occurred after attempting to run that. Any idea on that?
